STATE COLLEGE (CFB/Rivals) – The man in the white dress shirt, Penn State tie and rolled-up khakis jogged through the Beaver Stadium tunnel and on to the field before slowing down at the finish line – the 50-yard-line. It was alumnus Gus Curtin’s tribute to the iconic look once sported in the same stadium on fall weekends by the late coach Joe Paterno. A weekend during which the annual Blue-White spring game gave fans a glimpse into the Nittany Lions’ future under new coach Bill O’Brien also allowed people like Curtin to remember the past. From the bouquets of blue-and-white [...]

The school said Smith signed a 10-month, $ 850,000 contract and will also be eligible for other incentives. “I am tremendously excited to have this special opportunity to return to Arkansas and lead the Razorback football program,” Smith said in a statement. PURDUE (CFB/Kercheval) – Sidelined for the Little Caesar’s Bowl with a torn ACL, Purdue’s leading rusher from a year ago could be in danger of missing more time for a legal issue. New details regarding running back Ralph Bolden’s arrest last week have been public, and it appears Bolden forcibly “kissed an older female… against her will. She was crying.” The incident took place at a local bar. According to police, Bolden left through a back exit that leads into an alley and walked away when police arrived – the RB had previously refused to leave – and then ignored [...]

College football has reportedly taken another step toward a playoff system. And if a report from ESPN on Tuesday is to believed, the folks that run the game have demonstrated once more that, more often than not, they have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. According to the report from college football writer Mark Schlabach, the conference commissioners meeting in Florida this week were inching toward the formal adoption of a four-team playoff to determine the national champion. The system would likely not be put in place until 2014, according to the report. None of that was particularly surprising-it has [...]

Huntington (CFB/Kercheval) – Well, it didn’t take long for Marshall coach Doc Holliday to enforce disciplinary action for one player involved in a weekend arrest. Via a school statement, Holliday announced defensive back Phillip Warren “has been dismissed from the football program due to a violation of team rules and policies.” Additionally, Holliday said “Linebacker Stefone Grace, running back Martin Ward and defensive back Corie Wilson will all be disciplined internally.” Holliday added he would not comment further on the matter. The four Thundering Herd players were connected to an incident outside a local bar over the weekend. According to [...]

MORGANTOWN (CFB/Rivals) West Virginia‘s defense wants to be known as a positive just like its proven offense as the Mountaineers enter their first season in the Big 12. While the defense lost some key starters from last season, there were several standout plays in the annual Gold-Blue spring football game on Saturday. Defensive backs Matt Moro and Brodrick Jenkins and lineman Will Clarke had interceptions as the Blue defense defeated the Gold offense 43-34. With a modified scoring system, the defense earned its points for three-and-outs (five points), drive stops (three), fumble recoveries and interceptions (three apiece). “I feel we’re [...]

BLACKSBURG (CFB/Kercheval) – As we noted yesterday, inclement weather sidelined Virginia Tech’s annual spring game, and unfortunately for fans, there will not be a makeup day. But that doesn’t mean Saturday was a total bust for the Hokies. According to the Washington Post, VT “received verbal commitments from at least six prospects – the most the Hokies have gotten on one day since 2005.” Included in that group is highly touted quarterback Bucky Hodges. Hodges, a six-foot-five prospect, is a four-star recruit, according to Rivals.com. Rivals.com shows that VT only picked up three commitments from yesterday, but five within the [...]
