Looks like Magglio Ordonez is retiring Craig Calcaterra Mar 26, 2012, 4:00 PM EDT Leave a comment I don’t think this counts as an official announcement yet, but here’s Magglio Ordonez on Twitter this afternoon: Cerca del retiro! – Magglio Ordonez (@Mordonez30) March 26, 2012 Literally, that’s “close to retirement,” but do you really tweet that if you’re not gonna do it? Earlier this spring we learned that Ordonez wouldn’t accept a minor league deal and would only play for a guaranteed roster spot and paycheck. That wasn’t forthcoming, so this looks like the end of the road. Skip to [...]

Blue Jays pick Eric Thames in left field, send down Travis Snider Matthew Pouliot Mar 25, 2012, 8:25 PM EDT 3 Comments Travis Snider performed well enough to win the Blue Jays’ starting job in left field this spring. Unfortunately for him, Eric Thames played well enough to hold on to it. Snider was sent packing Sunday despite his four homers and 16 RBI in 17 games this spring. He was hitting .271/.340/.625, though he did strike out 17 times in 48 at-bats. Thames, the favorite going in, wasn’t bad himself, hitting .333/.380/.511. He has just one homer, but he [...]

The Texas Rangers took their first major step toward locking up their core players as they signed left-hander Derek Holland to a five-year deal. The contract, which runs through the 2016 season, also includes club options in 2017 and 2018. The Rangers began discussing a deal with Holland in December but the talks stalled. Holland is coming off a breakout season in 2011. In his first full year in the Texas rotation, Holland went 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA. Holland, 25, dazzled the country in his last start in Game 4 of the World Series. He pitched 8 1/3 shutout [...]

With his 40th birthday approaching, Chipper Jones announced Thursday he will retire after one more season with the Braves. The third baseman, who has spent his entire 18-year career with Atlanta, has battled injuries the past several seasons and actually decided to retire in 2010, only to change his mind. This time, he means it. The team issued a statement before its spring training game in Kissimmee, Fla., to announce this would be Jones’ final season. No matter what happens, the 1999 NL MVP will go down as one of the game’s greatest switch-hitters, a strong candidate for Cooperstown with [...]

Tampa Bay Rays minor league pitcher Matt Bush was arrested Thursday and will face charges of leaving the scene of a traffic accident and driving under the influence after a near-fatal incident in Charlotte County, Florida, The Tampa Tribune reported. The overall top pick in the 2004 MLB draft was driving in his SUV on US 41 around 5 p.m. when he hit a motorcyclist from behind, according to the Florida Highway Patrol – allegedly driving over the man’s head in the process. Officers said Bush, 26, then left the scene of the crash, leaving the 72-year-old motorcyclist, who was [...]

Matt Bush arrested for DUI, property damage, fleeing scene Drew Silva Mar 22, 2012, 11:39 PM EDT 6 Comments Matt Bush is again in serious legal trouble. According to Roger Mooney of the Tampa Tribune, the former No. 1 overall pick (by the Padres in 2004) was arrested Thursday evening in Florida for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended-or-revoked license, fleeing the scene of a crime with an injury and – to top it all off – property damage. Bush has been trying to revitalize his career as a reliever in the Rays’ minor league system. But it [...]

Chien-Ming Wang could be sidelined for another month Drew Silva Mar 21, 2012, 8:58 PM EDT 1 Comment Nationals manger Davey Johnson did not hold back Wednesday when describing the severity of starter Chien-Ming Wang’s strained left hamstring (via CSNWashington.com’s Nats Insider): “He’s moving around walking good, but from what I saw today, he’s got quite a bit of blood in there,” Johnson said. “Before he gets on the mound, I’d say three weeks, maybe a month. I’ll have to double-check with the doctor, but I just saw a lot of blood in there.” Wang is going to play catch [...]
