Tiger Stadium Needs Love Too

DETROIT (MLB/Calcaterra) – Everyone went all out for Fenway Park’s 100th anniversary on Friday. But if there was any justice in the world there would have been two grand old parks celebrating their centennials. Because Tiger Stadium would have turned 100 that day too. Yes, I realize that I am nearly 15 years too late to cry about this, but I still cry. Tiger Stadium was where I discovered baseball, dammit, and where I fell in love with it. And I realize that my case is unique in that, because of a connected relative, I always had decent seats and [...]

Yankees’ Pineda to Miss Rest of Season

Updated Apr 25, 2012 11:04 PM ET Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda needs surgery on his right shoulder and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Wednesday. Doctors diagnosed the 23-year-old right-hander with a torn labrum and he will undergo surgery Tuesday. He is expected to be out of action for at least a year. General manager Brian Cashman said Pineda felt a “sharp pain” in his shoulder Saturday after 15 pitches in an extended spring training game in Florida. The six-foot-seven Dominican came to the Yankees in the winter in a trade, with the Yankees sending top [...]

BOSTON (MLB/Newsfeed) — Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis and Julie Brady, the sister of the Patriots’ star quarterback, have tied the knot in a quiet ceremony. After more than a year of dating, the couple were married Thursday at their Weston, Mass., home in front of immediate family. “It was definitely the greatest off day of my life,” Youkilis told WAAF radio station. “It was a lot of fun, good times. I know there has been some rough times with baseball, but – I don’t usually talk about this – but it’s something good and I wanted to share.” [...]

Darvish Stymies Yankees for Win

Updated Apr 25, 2012 12:40 AM ET ARLINGTON, Texas Hiroki Kuroda was impressive on the mound for the New York Yankees. Only problem for the Bronx Bombers was that Kuroda’s fellow countryman, Yu Darvish, was even better pitching for the Texas Rangers. Darvish is getting better every start and may be getting to a point where he will have a hard time topping himself, after striking out 10 and pitching into the ninth inning of a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. “You hear a lot of guys get hyped and he was everything that you’d [...]

Yanks Hammer Rangers

ARLINGTON (MLB/) – Derek Jeter is hitting the way he did in his prime and CC Sabathia looks more like his old self with each outing. No wonder the New York Yankees are starting to get on a roll. Jeter had four hits to stretch his hitting streak to 13 games, Sabathia pitched a season-high eight innings and Alex Rodriguez belted a three-run homer in a 7-4 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. “I keep kidding him that it’s like 1999 again – three hits every day. He’s amazing,” Rodriguez said of the 37-year-old Jeter. “He’s playing like [...]

Erik Bedard Can’t Get Any Help

PITTSBURG (NBA/Pouliot) – Erik Bedard is hardly the only quality pitcher still winless on the season. Jordan Zimmermann, Ryan Dempster, Cliff Lee and and Bruce Chen all have ERAs of 2.00 or better and are still sporting zeroes in the win column. None of those guys, though, have taken more than two losses. Bedard was just tagged with his fourth today after allowing three runs – two earned – in seven innings against the Cardinals. Bedard has allowed just eight runs – seven earned – on the season, but the Pirates have scored a total of three in his four [...]
