Coughlin still not happy about questionable calls Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 16, 2012, 4:51 PM EST The NFL has tried to explain one of referee Bill Leavy’s questionable decisions in Sunday’s Packers-Giants game, but Tom Coughlin doesn’t sound satisfied. The Giants coach said he “doubts” he’ll hear from the league about why Leavy didn’t overturn a call where Greg Jennings was ruled down by contact before an apparent fumble. Coughlin was asked if he saw anything on film that would make the call even clearer. “There is, but I won’t get into it,” Coughlin said via Mike Garafolo [...]

As usual, Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed was in the right place at the right time Sunday, batting down a desperation pass into the end zone during a 20-13 divisional playoff victory over the Houston Texans. But Reed landed awkwardly on the Texans’ final play from scrimmage and was carried off the field by linebacker Ray Lewis and cornerback Jimmy Smith, unable to put weight on his left leg. Moments after the game, Reed told NFL Network’s Albert Breer he rolled his left ankle. “It don’t even matter right now,” Reed said. “I just have to heal up as best [...]

The NFL is a passing league, as we’ve seen over and over again this NFL season, and if you don’t have a quarterback who can make plays consistently, you’re probably not going to win many games. And the Denver Broncos don’t have a quarterback who can make plays consistently. The Broncos’ season came to an end on Saturday night with a humiliating 45-10 loss, and Tim Tebow’s numbers were so far short of what NFL teams need from their quarterbacks that any Broncos fan who looks at things objectively would have to wonder if Tebow is really the best man [...]

New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas returned to the sideline following a brief trip into the locker room after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit on the opening drive of Saturday’s divisional playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers. On third down from the 49ers’ 7-yard line, Thomas caught a pass from Drew Brees but was hit hard by San Francisco safety Donte Witner 1 yard shy of a first down. Thomas fumbled on the play, and the 49ers recovered the ball to keep the Saints from jumping out to an early lead. Thomas returned to the field just before the [...]

FCC considers ending the blackout rule Posted by Mike Florio on January 13, 2012, 10:05 PM EST Last month, Senator Sherrod Brown (D.-Ohio) called for the NFL to end its “failed” blackout policy, after said policy successfully had prevented six of seven Bengals home games from being televised in the Cincinnati area. On Thursday, the FCC decided to seek public comment on the elimination of rules that prevent blacked out games from being televised via cable and satellite operators. If those rules are eliminated by the FCC, blackouts essentially would end. Per Richard Sandomir of the New York Times, the [...]

The St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms with Jeff Fisher to be their next head coach, a league source told NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi on Friday. The team later confirmed that it is finalizing a deal to hire the 53-year-old Fisher. Instant Reaction: Fisher to Rams Fisher had been the most prominent candidate connected to any of the current head-coaching vacancies, interviewing with both the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins. Most recently, NFL Network had reported that Fisher was close to joining the Dolphins. Previously, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora had reported that St. Louis was likely [...]

On Wednesday, Patriots defensive tackle Kyle Love served as the voice for many when he proclaimed he was sick of Tebowmania. “I can’t speak for everybody, I can just speak for myself, I can say that it does (get old) for me,” Love said. “It gets to the point where you get tired of hearing it. You just have to keep your TV off if you don’t.” Broncos tight end Daniel Fells made it clear negative comments like Love’s find their way into Denver’s locker room. “I love listening to people hate on us,” Fells said Wednesday, according to ESPN.com.
