HAZELWOOD, Mo. — When it’s time to leave work, David Backes is the kind of person that leaves it all at the office — or rink, in his case. David Backes Center – STL GOALS: 1 | ASST: 0 | PTS: 1SOG: 5 | +/-: -3 At least most of the time. Backes, the Blues’ center and first-year captain, prefers to devote his time and attention to wife Kelly and their pets. Both are advocates for various charities, including David’s Dogs and Kelly’s Kats. These organizations work to get needy stray pets placed in loving homes, as well as raise [...]

CHICAGO — Apparently, overtime isn’t limited to just the ice for the Chicago Blackhawks in this Western Conference Quarterfinal series against the Phoenix Coyotes. After winning the series’ fifth straight OT game 2-1 on Saturday night at Jobing.com Arena, the Blackhawks needed extra time to get home for Monday’s Game 6 at United Center. The Hawks were supposed to arrive at O’Hare Airport mid-afternoon on Sunday and meet with the local media upon arrival. Instead, thanks to some issues with the plane, the Hawks’ charter jet didn’t touch down in the Windy City until roughly five hours after originally scheduled. [...]

SUNRISE, FLA. – Neither Zach Parise nor Martin Brodeur had much of an interest in peering into a crystal ball Sunday afternoon. During a conference call with reporters, the New Jersey Devils captain and goaltender were asked about their respective futures. Parise is slated to be the best forward available on the free agency market this summer, and speculation already has the Detroit Red Wings at the head of the pack in line to sign the talented 27-year-old. If the Devils lose Game 6 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal against the Florida Panthers Tuesday, their season is over. “It’s blocked [...]

OTTAWA – At the beginning of the season, few could have predicted that the Ottawa Senators would be active in the playoffs. Now those same Senators are on the brink of knocking out the New York Rangers – the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, and a club pegged by many to play long into the spring. Here are five reasons why the Senators have taken a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series: 1. Craig Anderson After coming off a three-week recovery for a hand laceration sustained at home, Anderson has been huge for the Senators in [...]

VANCOUVER — Canucks coach Alain Vigneault has a simple set of instructions for his new second line as Vancouver again faces playoff elimination on Sunday. “Shut up and play,” Vigneault said. Maxim Lapierre Center – VAN GOALS: 0 | ASST: 1 | PTS: 1SOG: 9 | +/-: 0 Actually, Vigneault’s directive was only aimed at one member of a new-look second line now loaded with talkative agitators: Maxim Lapierre. The coach insisted incumbent center Ryan Kesler and former first liner Alexandre Burrows are reformed trash talkers, focusing their efforts instead on playing hard between the whistles rather than yapping after [...]

NEW YORK – Craig Anderson stole the show on Broadway Saturday night. The No. 8-seeded Senators are on the verge of pulling off the unthinkable by pushing the No. 1-ranked New York Rangers to the brink of elimination with a stunning 2-0 win in Game 5 Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Led by Anderson’s spectacular second career post-season shutout, with 41 stops, the Senators pulled into a 3-2 series lead and can send the Rangers packing with a victory in Game 6 Monday night at Scotiabank Place. The good news for the Senators is in the post-lockout era, 25-of-31 [...]

GLENDALE, Ariz. — With Marian Hossa’s equipment hanging in his usual locker in the visiting dressing room at Jobing.com Arena, his Chicago Blackhawks teammates reacted with measured approval to the 25-game suspension Phoenix winger Raffi Torres received for the hit Tuesday night in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals series that injured Hossa. “(Torres) is going to have to live with (his actions),” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. ‘I’m sure a lofty suspension like that would make any player kind of rethink their actions. Maybe he doesn’t think it was such a normal hockey play anymore.” But with Hossa [...]
