LAS VEGAS —Miguel Cotto is the featured attraction, and Ricardo Mayorga will play his usual role as the foil. The real stars of Saturday night’s boxing card on the glittering Las Vegas Strip, though, might be two guys watching from ringside. Don King and Bob Arum, together again in search of a few more bucks. “It’s a return to glory,” King said. “We are back into the forefront of boxing, the sweet science. We are just renewing old acquaintances.” There was once a day when a fight between the two promoters would be as anticipated as some of the fights [...]

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND —Ricky Burns of Scotland made a successful second defense of his WBO super-featherweight title against Joseph Laryea on Saturday after the Ghanaian retired at the end of seven punishing rounds with a hand injury. Laryea appeared to signal to his corner that he was in pain at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena. After an exchange, the challenger (14-5) believed he had broken a knuckle in his right hand. Burns improved to 31-2 and positioned himself for a unification fight against IBF champion Mzonke Fana of South Africa. Not many would add Ricardo Mayorga to that list, and Cotto’s 12th-round technical knockout victory Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden won’t be remembered among his many epic wins. But Cotto, who retained the World Boxing Association super welterweight belt when Mayorga turned to referee Robert Byrd at 53 seconds of the final round and said he had had enough, had to work hard for the victory before 7,247 [...]
