Glasgow Wants to Host 2018 Youth Olympics

LONDON – The British Olympic Association says it has received a submission from Glasgow to be the candidate city if the BOA bids for the 2018 Youth Olympics. The BOA says the 2014 Commonwealth Games host was the only city to meet Monday’s deadline for British cities to declare their interest. The BOA and officials from the Scottish city will now meet over the next four weeks to decide whether a viable bid can be made. Mennea Questions Rome’s Plan to Bid for Olympics

ROME – One of Italy’s greatest athletes is questioning Rome’s plan to bid for the 2020 Olympics amid the country’s ongoing economic crisis. Former 200-meter world record holder Pietro Mennea tells Corriere della Sera that it’s “unthinkable” to go forward with the candidacy. Mennea, also a former member of the European Parliament, adds that “we’re a nation devastated by a scary economic crisis. Researchers: West Germany Tolerated Doping

BERLIN – Two groups of researchers claim that the West German government accepted doping as a necessary evil for the country’s athletes to achieve Olympic success in the 1970s and 1980s. Poll Shows Majority Support for Tokyo’s 2020 Bid

TOKYO – A nationwide poll has shown that 65.7 percent of respondents support Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. “These results indicate that some 80 million people across the whole of Japan are behind our bid,” Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda said Monday. “This is wonderful news for Tokyo 2020.” The Japanese capital is up against Doha, Qatar; Baku, Azerbaijan; Istanbul; Madrid and Rome. WW II Bomb Scraps Youth Olympics Medals Ceremony

INNSBRUCK, Austria – An aerial bomb from World War II was found at a construction site Thursday, forcing the postponement of the daily medals ceremony at the Winter Youth Olympics. The 550-pound bomb was discovered by workers nearby. The bomb was being disposed at the time the downtown ceremony was scheduled to start. The ceremony will be held Friday.
