Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan powered the original Dream Team’s dominant run through the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Mention a ‘Dream Team’ and the U.S. basketball squad that competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, the original set of sportsmen to have that moniker, immediately come to mind. Just like a Brazilian soccer fan naming his country’s 1970 World Cup winning team, most American basketball aficionados have little trouble rattling off the dozen superstars who went to Spain and returned with the gold medals 20 years ago. Often thought of as the greatest team ever assembled in [...]

Sparked by Ben Sheets’ three-hit, no-walk shutout, the U.S. defeated Cuba, 4-0, in Sydney to win gold and put an end to their rivals Olympic winning streak. Events in the 2000 Olympics baseball final were compared at the time with the infamous 1972 basketball final in which the United States’ 62-game winning streak at the Games was brought to an end by the Soviet Union. The big difference was that this time it was the U.S. who caused the massive upset by defeating Cuba 4-0. Cuba had won the 1992 and 1996 gold medals with perfect 9-0 scores throughout the [...]

Joe Frazier’s death last November prompted many memories of his great career. Before he became known as “Smokin’ Joe,” Joe Frazier gained international acclaim at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, where he won the lone gold medal for Team USA in boxing. Many obituaries focused primarily on his professional fights, including his three momentous battles with Muhammad Ali. However, Frazier had first come to international recognition at the 1964 Olympics when he rescued the United States’ boxing credibility with the only American gold medal in the ring at that Games. The remarkable thing was that Frazier was not originally selected [...]

Veteran setter Lloy Ball kicks off the celebration after the U.S. men beat Brazil for the volleyball gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The U.S. men’s volleyball team ended a two-decade gold medal drought, which had lasted since the Karch Kiraly era in the 1980s, when they won in Beijing four years ago. It was a culmination of a three-and-a-half year journey for coach Hugh McCutcheon, who took over at the helm in February 2005 with the brief of getting the U.S. back on the podium again. The Stars and Stripes had been last raised at an Olympic [...]

Kerri Walsh and Misty May celebrate their victory in the gold medal match of the 2004 Olympic beach volleyball tournament in Athens. Beach volleyball stars Misty May and Kerri Walsh, having teamed up at the end of 2000, suggested something special could happen at the 2004 Olympic Games when they went through the previous year undefeated: going 39-0 and winning eight tournaments. This impression was further enhanced in 2004 as, now nicknamed The Dynamic Duo, the pair won their first six tournaments and were the top seeds for Athens. May and Walsh waltzed through their opening group with ease at [...]

Team USA celebrates its victory over Australia in the gold medal game at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The U.S. women’s team had won the Olympic gold medal at softball’s previous two appearances in 1996 and 2000 but what made their three-peat in 2004 so special was the emphatic way they triumphed for the third time. They notched up nine straight victories and didn’t even concede a run in the Helliniko Olympic Complex, on the Athens coast, until they faced Australia in the final, outscoring their opponents 51-1. Lead by coach Mike Candrea, the U.S. romped through its preliminary group. Games [...]

Frustrated by silver at the 1984 Olympics and 1987 World Championships, Florence Griffith-Joyner trained like crazy and wound up with three golds in Seoul and two world records in 1988. Florence Griffith-Joyner had won a 1984 Olympic Games 200m silver medal but galvanized by her marriage to 1984 triple jump champion Al Joyner in October 1987 and the frustration of another silver medal over the furlong at the 1987 World Championships, she trained as never before in the winter before Seoul. The results soon started to show with a series of excellent times over both 100m and 200m before the [...]
