KANSAS CITY (WIRE/SOCCER) – Sporting Kansas City is off to the best start by an MLS team in 14 years, dominating a home-heavy portion of its schedule. Taking to the road for two games in four days may present a new set of challenges. Sporting KC looks to remain perfect when it visits the Vancouver Whitecaps on Wednesday night. No team has started better than Kansas City (6-0-0) since Los Angeles won its first nine games in 1998, and coach Peter Vermes’ squad has made it look rather easy. It has outscored opponents 9-1 and set an MLS record by [...]

Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan powered the original Dream Team’s dominant run through the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Mention a ‘Dream Team’ and the U.S. basketball squad that competed at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, the original set of sportsmen to have that moniker, immediately come to mind. Just like a Brazilian soccer fan naming his country’s 1970 World Cup winning team, most American basketball aficionados have little trouble rattling off the dozen superstars who went to Spain and returned with the gold medals 20 years ago. Often thought of as the greatest team ever assembled in [...]

One week ago, Bubba Watson defeated Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff to win the 2012 Masters. In the week since, the Bubbster made the rounds of talk shows in New York City, a well-deserved victory lap, and one in which his wit and sense of fun probably drew a few more fans to golf. And Oosthuizen? He merely hopped a plane and spent 30 hours traveling to play in the Maybank Malaysian Open. Was the effort worth it? You bet. Oosthuizen won in Malaysia today, despite the travel fatique, despite weather interruptions to the tournament, despite having to play 26 [...]

WIRE/F1 – Lotus are looking into the potential benefits of developing their own version of Mercedes’ ‘double DRS’ system, after their protest against the solution in China failed, effectively rubber-stamping it and similar designs as legal. However, Lotus insist it will not be a question of simply aping Mercedes’ system, which uses airflow channelled from the DRS rear wing to stall the front wing, but rather of exploring all the possibilities opened up by the stewards’ ruling. “We are at the point of making estimates of how big the gain might be and assessing the difficulty in actually realising that [...]

MONACO (Tennis) – Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Jurgen Melzer of Austria advanced to the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Monday. The 13th-seeded Verdasco, a finalist in 2010, dropped serve twice in the first set, but then did not face another break point in beating Belgium’s Olivier Rochus 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. He next plays Croatia’s Ivan Dodig. The 15th-seeded Melzer had an easier match, breaking Poland’s Lukasz Kubot five times en route to a 6-2, 7-5 win. He next faces Marcel Granollers of Spain or Frenchman Julien Benneteau. Paul-Henri Mathieu, trying to find his way back after [...]
