What Are the Tour and Tournament Cut Rules?

The specific regulations governing tournament cuts varies depending on the tour, and there is some variation among the major championships’ cut rules, too. Should Augusta National Open Its Membership to Women?

Women can visit Augusta National Golf Club, play the course, grab a meal, stay overnight in one of the cabins, as guests of a member. Women just can’t join to become members. Augusta National is men-only in its membership. Augusta isn’t even close to the only such club to have a men-only policy. Heck, one of golf’s governing bodies – the R&A – is men only! But questions about Augusta National’s policies arose again this week because IBM recently named a woman its CEO, and IBM CEOs have traditionally been given membership at Augusta. We’ve just posted an article – [...]

13-Year-Old Misses Cut on Euro Tour

A 13-year-old is now the youngest golfer to play in a European Tour tournament. Guan Tian-Lang of China teed off Thursday in the Volvo China Open, shooting 79 in Round 1. He followed that up with a second-round 77, finishing at 12-over 156, missing the cut. But pretty impressive for a 13-year-old playing a European Tour event on a 7,500-yard course. Guan got into the tournament by finishing fourth in a qualifying event. In 2011, he won the Boys 11-12 division at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego by 11 strokes. Guan, at 13 years, 173 days [...]

Wie’s Hawaii Homecoming Doesn’t Help Her Struggles

Michelle Wie is struggling. Her golf game in 2012 has been a mess. And now she’s missed her third straight cut. This one probably hurts more, however, since it happened at the LPGA Lotte Championship in Wie’s home state of Hawaii. On a golf course with which she’s very familiar. Wie shot 78-76 over two rounds at Ko Olina Golf Club at the Lotte, missing the cut by seven strokes. Her 154 total was 18 shots worse than the leaders, and only 12 golfers who completed the first two rounds posted worse scores. Wie was paired in the first two [...]

A Lefty Wins Masters, but It’s Bubba, Not Mickelson

Do shamrock green and pink go together? They do if you’re Bubba Watson and you now have a Green Jacket to pair with your pink outfits, pink clothes and pink driver. Watson is a first-time major championship winner after outlasting Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff at the 2012 Masters. Watson and Oosthuizen finished at 278, 10-under par, then both parred the first extra hole. On the second playoff hole (hole No. 10), Watson hit a recovery shot that will go down as the shot of the tournament. Which is saying something, given that on his second hole of the day, [...]
