In the wake of Urban Meyer‘s (surprisingly good) on-air auditions, it was a widely-held thought that it was a matter of when not if the ex-Florida head coach was hired by ESPN. Monday, the “when” officially came to fruition. Citing a source, Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post is reporting that Meyer has been offered and accepted an analyst position with the network. It’s unclear precisely what Meyer’s role will entail, although we are privately holding out hope that the hiring will mean less airtime for Dr. Lou and his insufferable sidekick Mark May. ESPN is scheduled to hold [...]

OAKLAND, Calif. – Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams missed his second straight game because of a hyperextended right wrist. Earl Watson started in Williams’ place at Golden State on Sunday night. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was hopeful that Williams would return against Charlotte on Monday night. Williams was injured in a scramble for a loose ball during Utah’s 112-105 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday night. He stayed in the game and finished with a season-high 39 points. Jazz center Mehmet Okur also missed the game against the Warriors because of a strained back.

Packers defensive line coach Mike Trgovac, who has been mentioned as a potential defensive coordinator candidate elsewhere, indicated Sunday that he plans to be back in Green Bay. “If it’s my choice, I will be here next year,” Trgovac told Jim Polzin of the Wisconsin State Journal Sunday. It’s unclear if Trgovac, a former Panthers defensive coordinator, would have received interest for open positions in Arizona or Philadelphia. But it sounds like he’d rather stay put, which is consistent with previous speculation we’ve heard on the subject.

Josue Matias, a four-star lineman from Union City (N.J.), recently switched his verbal commitment from in-state favorite Rutgers to Florida State. With Matias’ verbal, the Seminoles, in just their second full year under Jimbo Fisher, have now climbed atop the recruiting rankings according to two recruiting services — Scout.com and ESPN.com. The ‘Noles are currently ranked No. 3 according to Rivals.com. Overall, FSU has 25 verbal commitments with room for a few more before National Signing Day on Feb. 2. Fisher has done a remarkable job of recruiting and, if nothing else, shown no drop off in those efforts since [...]

MILWAUKEE —Rickie Weeks wants to continue talking with the Milwaukee Brewers about a long-term extension, but only until spring training begins. The second baseman said he’ll tell agent Greg Genske to stop negotiating a new contract once he reports for spring training to focus on baseball and the upcoming season. “After spring training, no chance,” Weeks said Sunday during the team’s annual offseason fan event, Brewers On Deck. “I want to focus on the season.” Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said they haven’t been formally told of Weeks’ request, but believes it’s a good thing to wrap up talks [...]
