Clinton Portis Getting a Look-see from the Seahawks

AP Veteran running back Clinton Portis, largely forgotten throughout the 2011 training camp and preseason, will soon be getting another chance to get back into the league. Jason La Canfora reported earlier in the day that Portis will work out for the Seahawks this week.  Per La Canfora, it’s not expected that the Seahawks will sign Portis. It would be a surprise at this point if anyone signs Portis before the first weekend of NFL action.  Because any player with four or more years of service is entitled to the balance of his full salary as termination pay (a one-time [...]

Cooley Keeping Word, Bringing Top Players to Providence

Ed Cooley cannot publicly discuss specific prospects because of NCAA rules that prohibit it. But the Providence coach can talk generally about how he’s feeling these days. So I asked him to do exactly that. “I’m excited about our future,” Cooley said. “I think we’re off to a good start.” Yeah, I think so, too. While most sports fans have been consumed with Texas A&M’s imminent move to the SEC, Mike Vick’s new contract, LSU’s foot-stomping quarterback and Peyton Manning’s neck, a story that’s less relevant nationally but just as interesting in the world of college basketball is unfolding up [...]

See Ya: Texas a&M Leaving Big 12

Updated Aug 31, 2011 5:59 PM ET COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) The official Texas A&M fight song includes a line that bids farewell to Texas, ”so long to the orange and white.” By this time next year, Texas A&M may have said goodbye to a lot more than its storied, century-old rivalry with Texas. Texas A&M announced Wednesday that it will leave the Big 12 Conference by July 2012 if it can find another home, preferably in the SEC. The decision could set off another round of conference realignment in college sports and it raises questions about the future of the [...]

Today’s Overseas Roundup: Nick Young Talking to China

There are so many NBA players both talking to and signing with overseas teams that we collect them in a daily roundup. We do this in bullet points because we are bloggers and they are addictive to us like bon-bons to an old housewife. • How does Nick Young feel about smoking in arenas? It’s a valid question because the young Wizard’s swingman is apparently in talks to play there, according to Marc Stein at ESPN. He is a restricted free agent, which means a Chinese team can sign him under that league’s new restrictive rules, but Young would have [...]

While on the Disabled List a.J. Pierzynski May Have Lost His Job to Tyler Flowers

A.J. Pierzynski had started 28 of 32 games behind the plate for the White Sox when he fractured his wrist on August 12, but it sounds like he’ll be a part-time player once he returns from the disabled list. Tyler Flowers has impressed while filling in for Pierzynski and manager Ozzie Guillen told Doug Padilla of ESPN Chicago that the 25-year-old rookie will continue to play regularly down the stretch regardless of Pierzynski’s health status: Tyler has been great; very good. When A.J. gets here, we figure out how we play him. I don’t want to say A.J. is not [...]

David Steckel Calls Matt Bradley’s Criticisms of Alexander Semin ‘Not Shocking at All’

In the NFL, teams will often pick up free agents from division rivals in hopes of getting some precious bits of intelligence about their opponents. When it comes to the NHL, it seems like reporters can squeeze some interesting comments about a team once a player no longer wears that sweater. At least, that’s the way it seems with two former Washington Capitals. Earlier this month, we passed along Matt Bradley’s candid comments about his former team. To give you a quick synopsis, Bradley claimed that mercurial winger Alexander Semin ‘just doesn’t care,’ riffed on coach Bruce Boudreau’s tendency to [...]

PGA Champion Bradley Threw Out First Pitch at Fenway Park

PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley fulfilled a New England-born dream of his on Tuesday night when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park to start a critical series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Bradley had been expressing his nerves via his Twitter account, saying, “The first pitch is rapidly approaching. And I’m getting more and more nervous!!” How did he do? Take a look. Not bad at all. Bradley represented himself and the Jimmy Fund well. Afterward, Bradley was still riding high from the experience, again tweeting, “This is one of those days [...]

HGH Testing Remains at a Standstill

Reuters The NFL and the NFLPA agreed last month that the new CBA will include HGH testing, on both a random and annual basis.  The NFL wants to start the testing by Week One. The only problem?  With eight days until the start of the regular season, the two sides can’t agree on a testing procedure. Complicating matters is the fact that the World Anti-Doping Agency has aligned with the NFL, attempting to publicly pressure the players to accept WADA’s proposed protocol.  The group’s grand poobah, David Howman (pictured), recently said that scientists working for the NFLPA have accepted WADA’s [...]
