Kansas State has hired Bruce Weber as its basketball coach, turning to someone who once led Illinois to the national championship game to calm the waters in the wake of Frank Martin’s departure for South Carolina. A person a familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that Weber will be introduced at a news conference Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made. Weber was fired by Illinois after going 210-101 over nine seasons, which included six trips to the NCAA tournament and a runner-up finish in 2005. [...]

Kerri Walsh and Misty May celebrate their victory in the gold medal match of the 2004 Olympic beach volleyball tournament in Athens. Beach volleyball stars Misty May and Kerri Walsh, having teamed up at the end of 2000, suggested something special could happen at the 2004 Olympic Games when they went through the previous year undefeated: going 39-0 and winning eight tournaments. This impression was further enhanced in 2004 as, now nicknamed The Dynamic Duo, the pair won their first six tournaments and were the top seeds for Athens. May and Walsh waltzed through their opening group with ease at [...]

VAUGHAN, Ont. – Prior to every season, NHL Central Scouting has already evaluated hundreds of the top prospects available in the upcoming NHL Draft. In addition to meticulous reports that detail a player’s good and bad points, and then sharing them with their colleagues, it’s also helpful to have those prospects file some paperwork. So, long before Nail Yakupov of the Sarnia Sting, Mikhail Grigorenko of the Quebec Remparts, Ryan Murray of the Everett Silvertips, Radek Faksa of the Kitchener Rangers and Morgan Rielly of the Moose Jaw Warriors begin a new season, they’ve already completed Central Scouting’s ‘questionnaire.’ There’s [...]

Griffin signed footballs and Redskins helmets, and fans shelled out $ 100 apiece to get their pictures taken with [...]

New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda will begin the season on the disabled list after tests showed inflammation in a shoulder tendon, but no structural damage. Pineda underwent treatment, including icing, at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa after an MRI exam on Saturday. The right-hander doesn’t know when he’ll resume playing catch. “I’m feeling a little better,” Pineda said. [...]

^ COLUMBUS, Ohio – Spring football practice began Wednesday as Ohio State’s basketball team prepared for its second trip to the Final Four in the last six years. Perfect symmetry there. The basketball team is usually playing in the shadow of goal posts on the Ohio State campus, where fans love to pack the football stadium and watch the band spell “Ohio” in script at halftime. The Buckeyes’ football team is the overriding talk of the town, even when it involves the program’s recent scandals. In the last few months, the city has been consumed by the hiring of Urban [...]

It’s the Los Angeles Kings’ turn to be first in the Pacific Division, at least for a night. L.A. jumped into the top spot in the NHL’s most tightly contested division on Friday night by stifling the Oilers in a 4-1 win at Edmonton while the Dallas Stars were losing 5-2 at Vancouver. Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who won for the eighth time in 10 games. The Kings then watched as the Canucks rode a 28-save performance by emergency starter Cory Schneider to victory against the Stars. The division rivals nearly flipped positions [...]
