Police in Ky. Assess Handling of Post-Game Mayhem

Police said Sunday that they are satisfied with their work to control the crowds that spilled onto the street after the University of Kentucky defeated rival Louisville, despite the images of rowdy revelers burning couches and a car that had been flipped over. So while authorities are evaluating how things went as they prepare for the possibility of more celebrations ahead of Monday night’s Final Four Championship game, they aren’t anticipating big changes to their plans. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that police had to dodge beer bottles while putting out dozens of fires in the streets. Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle [...]

Leafs Get to Play the Spoiler Card Against Rivals

TORONTO – Leafs coach Randy Carlyle chuckled when it was presented to him after the morning skate that he had a chance to make life miserable for the Buffalo Sabres by playing the spoiler card. “We’ve used a lot of cards,” Carlyle said. “This deck has only got 52.” Plus the jokers, of which there had been too many prior to Saturday’s night’s huge exhale of a 4-3 win. Carlyle’s counterpart, Buffalo’s Lindy Ruff, new better however. His Sabres were weary after a home loss to Pittsburgh the night before and had lost two defenceman over the past week. And [...]

Putting a Bow on a Memorable Month of March

Putting a bow on a memorable month of March Posted by Mike Florio on April 1, 2012, 7:28 PM EDT The craziest month of offseason news in NFL history has been very, very good for business. Before the month that ended on Saturday, the 31-day high-water mark was 63.8 million page views. The new record, thanks to March 2012, is a whopping and previously unthinkable 91.9 million. The numbers came from 8.33 million unique visitors from March 1 through March 31. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the guys who grabbed an oar and rowed through the never-ending [...]

Potential Is Evident in Texas’ Spring Game

Potential is evident in Texas’ spring game Posted by Ben Kercheval on April 1, 2012, 5:18 PM EDT The 2011 Texas team featured several true freshman on both sides of the ball, many of whom contributed immediately. As a result, the Longhorns were decent – certainly a step up from a disastrous 2010 year – but experienced a growing pain or two in an 8-5 campaign that, at least, ended on a positive note with a Holiday Bowl win over Cal. Four months later at UT’s spring game, a 35-28 win in favor of team “Texas” over team “Longhorns” for [...]

Trophies, Medals and Awards at the Masters

The Green Jacket is one of the most famous “trophies” in golf, presented every year to the winner of The Masters. But it’s not a traditional trophy, is it? What about a traditional trophy – a golden or silver or crystal construction that the winner of a tournament holds aloft? Does The Masters have one of those? Check out The Masters trophy, plus trophies for low amateur and Par-3 winners, and the rest of the Masters [...]

All Down to the Strategy in F1

This year it will all be down to the tires. We do not have a tire war anymore, but we have a game the F1 teams have to play with tire wear, pit stops, choice of when to use what. And that will allow for strategy questions to take center stage. That’s how we can explain – a little bit – the sudden rise of the Sauber against the Ferrari, despite both having the same engine. So many comments about the tire strategy emerged at the Malaysian Grand Prix last weekend that it whets the appetite with prospects for uncertain [...]

Talbot Looking Forward to on-Ice Rivalry with Crosby

Maxime Talbot got used to seeing a lot of Sidney Crosby during their six seasons as teammates with the Pittsburgh Penguins. They would practice together, their locker stalls were right next to each other, they even shot a television commercial together for Reebok. Talbot likely will see a lot more of Crosby on Sunday, when Talbot’s new team, the Philadelphia Flyers, visits the Pittsburgh Penguins (12:30 p.m., NBC) in a game that could be a precursor to a first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series. “It’s going to be a fun time. Playing the Penguins has been fun for me this year, [...]
