Pitino’s Son Replacing Isiah Thomas As FIU Coach

MIAMI Richard Pitino has been hired to replace Isiah Thomas at Florida International, signing his contract Monday afternoon to take over a program that has not posted a winning season in 12 years. The 29-year-old Pitino is the son of Louisville coach Rick Pitino. The younger Pitino spent this past season as Louisville’s associate head coach under his father, helping the Cardinals reach the Final Four. FIU called a news conference for later Monday to announce the move. Terms of the contract were not immediately released, though as a public university FIU eventually will have to make them available. “I [...]

Flyers Believe Discipline Is Big Reason for Series Lead

VOORHEES, N.J. — Even the Broad Street Bullies couldn’t complain about the style of hockey the current Philadelphia Flyers are playing right now — not when the results are so satisfying. The Flyers are leading the Penguins 3-0 in the teams’ Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series for many reasons, most notably because of the 20 goals they’ve scored, but also because they’ve become a team that is all about discipline, playing whistle-to-whistle, and not aggressively seeking vengeance for any one hit, play or goal. “After whistles you’re used to seeing the Flyers start trouble,” Danny Briere said Monday, “and for the [...]

Rays Avoid Four-Game Sweep Vs. Red Sox

Updated Apr 16, 2012 2:49 PM ET BOSTON James Shields allowed four hits in 8 1-3 innings, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 Monday to avoid a four-game sweep. The only run came when Daniel Bard (0-2) walked Evan Longoria on four pitches with the bases loaded in the seventh. Shields (2-0) led the majors with 11 complete games last year and had a chance for another until he walked Dustin Pedroia with one out in the ninth. Fernando Rodney retired the next two batters for his fourth save in four chances. Shields gave up [...]

This Week: Texas Open and China Open

The golf world visits the second-largest U.S. state and the third-largest country (both by area) this week with the PGA Tour Valero Texas Open and the European Tour Volvo China Open. The Texas Open is played on the Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio. In 2011, that golf course was seventh-toughest on the PGA Tour in relation to par, but every course ahead of it was either a par-70 or par-71. Oaks is a par-72. And in stroke average, TPC San Antonio was the toughest track on the PGA Tour in 2011. Kevin Na’s infamous 16 on one hole didn’t [...]

Race – Rosberg an F1 Winner After Shanghai Thriller

How ironic was it that in a race that depended on tyre wear and strategy, it should all come right for Mercedes and Nico Rosberg as the young German scored his maiden Grand Prix victory by 20.6s as a fantastic war raged a long way behind him? Rosberg was in charge all the way, proving convincingly that Mercedes have solved their tyre degradation issues. It was their first ‘works’ victory since Juan Manuel Fangio won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza back in 1955, prior to their withdrawal from the sport. To begin with Rosberg was chased off the grid [...]

USC’s Defense Beats Offense in Spring Game

LOS ANGELES Matt Barkley passed for 212 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Marqise Lee, and the Southern California defense made several big plays for a 34-27 victory in the Trojans’ spring game Saturday. Barkley went 23 for 39, and backup Cody Kessler threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to fullback Soma Vainuku in front of 15,515 fans at the Coliseum. Lee caught seven passes for 57 yards while fellow receiver Robert Woods sat out. Woods, an All-American as a sophomore, has missed nearly every workout of spring practice while recovering from offseason surgery on his right ankle. Barkley played [...]
