MADISON (CBB/Wire) – Wisconsin will allow freshman forward Jarrod Uthoff to transfer to any school outside the Big Ten, hoping to defuse a situation that has drawn national criticism. The school said Uthoff asked for permission to contact 16 schools and the Badgers rejected four of them. Uthoff appealed over three of those schools and met Thursday with Athletic Director Barry Alvarez and associate AD Justin Doherty. The two officials then met with coach Bo Ryan and decided Uthoff can contact any school he wants to outside the Big Ten. The school said in a release that “Ryan wanted the [...]

GLENDALE, Ariz. — With Marian Hossa’s equipment hanging in his usual locker in the visiting dressing room at Jobing.com Arena, his Chicago Blackhawks teammates reacted with measured approval to the 25-game suspension Phoenix winger Raffi Torres received for the hit Tuesday night in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals series that injured Hossa. “(Torres) is going to have to live with (his actions),” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. ‘I’m sure a lofty suspension like that would make any player kind of rethink their actions. Maybe he doesn’t think it was such a normal hockey play anymore.” But with Hossa [...]

The Atlanta Falcons will not appear on the next season of HBO’s Hard Knocks, league sources said Saturday. The decision was made by, among others, owner Arthur Blank, general manager Thomas Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith. They were in agreement that the focus should be on football over the summer, and they didn’t want anything to distract from that. The Falcons were among a number of teams considered for the show, but they were never formally offered, according to a source close to the situation. The Falcons reportedly were the network’s first choice once the New York Jets appeared [...]

NEW YORK (NBA/Helin) – This is getting ugly. First NBA players’ union president Derek Fisher convinced the executive committee of the union to do a full-scale audit of the union and its business. Then union executive director Billy Hunter convinced the executive committee to both kill that audit and ask Fisher to resign. He refused. They asked again. Then Fisher released this statement on Friday night. We take it from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo. “I along with many others are extremely disappointed with the executive committee,” Fisher wrote in an email distributed by his publicist Friday night. “Their demand for [...]

STATE COLLEGE (CFB/Rivals) – The firing of a Penn State athletics official was connected to the investigation into the child sexual abuse case at the university, said two persons familiar with the situation. Mark Sherburne, an associate athletic director, was fired this week, said the people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to speak publicly about the matter. PITTSBURGH – For the Pittsburgh Penguins, it’s almost always about the stars, the big stars. Sidney Crosby is arguably the biggest name in hockey. Evgeni Malkin is the Art Ross Trophy winner and one of the favorites to win the Hart Trophy as MVP. Almost every other team in the NHL would feel fortunate to possess either one; the Penguins pencil both of them into the lineup every night. But in an elimination game — and, no doubt, their biggest game of the season so far — Pittsburgh’s stars didn’t carry the Penguins. Not even close. Instead, a must-win 3-2 [...]

Paralympian presented NYC Marathon gold medal to St. Petersburg orphanage she grew up in NEW YORK — No matter how much she tried, Tatyana McFadden couldn’t shake the idea. She was ready to revisit her roots. Born with a disability that left her paralyzed from the waist down and into a world unable and reluctant to provide the care that she needed, Tatyana overcame myriad obstacles [...]
