Giants Fire Sheridan and Wauffle

Just a day after the Giants fired defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, the team fired another member of the coaching staff. Mike Wauffle, who coached one of the better units in the NFL in 2007 and ’08, was relieved of his duties yesterday after a disappointing defensive performance by the Giants this season.

Wauffle joined the team in 2004, after being with the Raiders for six years. In ’07 he led a group, headlined by Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan, which collected 53 sacks and helped defeat the previously unbeaten Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Unfortunately since then, the sack totals dipped to 43 last season and to 32 this year, when the Giants allowed 427 points and allowed 15 more rushing yards per game than in ’08.
