Rapids Convert Red Cards into Three Valuable Road Points

07 May 2012

(MLS/Bianchi) — Colorado Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja returned to his old stomping grounds on Sunday and promptly found himself with the kind of advantage that practically demands three points. During a two-minute span in the first half, FC Dallas’ Daniel Hernandez and Blas Pérez were each awarded red cards, leaving the home side with just nine men and giving the Rapids a golden chance to collect three badly needed points. And despite their season-long struggle to score away from home, Colorado went out and capitalized on their man advantage, as Jaime Castrillón and Martín Rivero each scored in the [...]

07 May 2012

MADRID (WTA/Newsfeed) -Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka and second-seeded Maria Sharapova advanced to the second round of the Madrid Open with straight-set wins Sunday on the event’s new blue-clay court. Azarenka beat Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 7-6 (5), 6-4 in a tough opening match. The Australian Open champion and Kuznetsova traded breaks in the first set. Just when it looked as if the second set was going to end in another tiebreaker, Azarenka broke again to close out the match. “It was a really close match, so I was just happy that I won because they were difficult games to break,” said [...]

Zubrus Is the Latest Devil to Step Up

07 May 2012

NEWARK, N.J. (NHL/Morreale) — The New Jersey Devils have been down but never out at any stage during the Stanley Cup Playoffs this spring, from the benching of future Hall of Fame goalie Martin Brodeur to the incredible rally from a 3-2 series deficit with back-to-back overtime wins against the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series. Or, from the Game 1 overtime loss against the Philadelphia Flyers to the debilitating effect they’ve had on what was once a potent Flyers offense en route to three successive victories. Let’s face it — the Devils are building the kind of [...]

04 May 2012

San Antonio (NBA/Moore) – The San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 106-91 Sunday in Game 1 of their first round series, behind 28 points and 8 assists from Tony Parker. The Spurs have taken a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven series. For San Antonio, it was a way to wipe clean the memories of last year’s embarrassing first-round loss to the Grizzlies and get a win in the first game on their home floor. They lead throughout the game and while Utah hung in there, the Spurs busted it open in the third, and were able to close the [...]

04 May 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. (CFB/Newsfeed) – Tony Pierson took the handoff from Dayne Crist deep in the backfield, started off toward his right and then made a subtle move back to his left. Just as a hole big enough for Charlie Weis to run through opened up. Pierson pranced through it and then out-ran a pair of safeties 88 yards for a touchdown, the highlight of a big afternoon for the sophomore running back. He finished with 141 yards on only seven carries to steal the spotlight from Crist’s debut in the Kansas spring game. Pierson and Crist led the blue team, [...]

UCLA Loses Bowens for Season

04 May 2012

LOS ANGELES (CFB/Kercheval) – The primary goals of any coach during spring practices is to shake off the rust, learn the schemes and stay healthy. Unfortunately for new UCLA coach Jim Mora, he’s lost one of his players for the latter reason. Mora confirmed on Saturday that linebacker Isaiah Bowens would miss the 2012 with a torn ACL, which he suffered last week during practice when a helmet collided with his knee (eek). “It’s a bad deal,” Mora said. “That’s a big loss for us and you just feel for the kid. He was making progress and working hard and [...]
