Playing Golf at Pinehurst with a Hall of Famer

12 April 2011

It was quite an opportunity and a great experience to get to play the new old Pinehurst No. 2 with President and COO of Pinehurst, Don Padgett II. He was a spectacular host and even gave me a putting tip. But he’s not a Hall of Famer. His looper is. Willie McRae is about to turn 78 years old on May 19. He’s been on a bag for 68 years. That means he started carrying bags when he was 10. I was still beating Super Mario Bros. 3. McRae was inducted into the Professional Caddie Association Hall of Fame in [...]

Whitmarsh: Lewis Can Stay for a Long Time

12 April 2011

Whitmarsh: Lewis can stay for a long time McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh says there is no reason why Lewis Hamilton can’t see out his career with the Woking team. Hamilton has in recent weeks been linked with a move to Red Bull, but both camps have been quick to dismiss the speculation. Whitmarsh though is making sure that Hamilton knows McLaren are desperate to hang onto him for as long as possible. “There’s no reason why we can’t have 10 more great years and he will in that time bestride this sport and dominate it,” Whitmarsh is quoted in [...]

UConn G Walker to Enter NBA Draft

12 April 2011

STORRS, Conn. —Connecticut’s Kemba Walker announced he will enter the NBA draft. The 6-foot-1 All-American guard led the Huskies to a 32-9 record, including an 11-0 postseason run that ended with a national championship. Walker is expected to be a first-round pick, and perhaps the second guard chosen behind Duke’s Kyrie Irving. Walker averaged 23.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists during his junior season, and scored a school record 965 points, accounting for 45 percent of the Huskies’ offense. Kemba Walker led Connecticut to the NCAA title and is expected to be a first-round pick in the NBA draft.(David [...]

N.C. State’s Leading Rusher to Undergo Surgery

12 April 2011

Getty Images North Carolina State will be without their leading rusher for the remainder of spring practice, head coach Tom O’Brien announced Tuesday.  Fortunately for the Wolfpack, the injury shouldn’t be an issue once the season rolls around. Mustafa Greene suffered a foot injury during a scrimmage Saturday and will be sidelined through the rest of the spring sessions.  While the specific nature of the injury wasn’t revealed, O’Brien said Greene will undergo surgery at some point in the near future. The good news is that O’Brien said that Greene will “be back in the fall.”  It’s unclear whether the [...]

Lethal Hernandez Helps Send United into Semis

12 April 2011

* Hernandez scores just before halftime * Chelsea have Ramires sent off * Torres fails again (adds detail) By Sonia Oxley MANCHESTER, England, April 12 – Javier Hernandez’s goal-poaching knack helped Manchester United inflict more Champions League misery on Chelsea as they moved into the semi-finals with a 3-1 aggregate victory on Tuesday. The Mexican struck before halftime and Park Ji-sung sealed a 2-1 victory on a raucous night at Old Trafford after a spirited Chelsea briefly levelled through substitute Didier Drogba after the Londoners had been reduced to 10 men. United, who beat Chelsea on penalties in the 2008 [...]

Ilya Bryzgalov’s Diving Stop Earns Him the Save of the Week (April 4-10)

12 April 2011

Every week, Pro Hockey Talk will ask our readers to choose the best goal and save of that seven-day period. Sometimes there might not be seven nominees, whether that be because there weren’t enough great clips or one person received multiple awards. Either way, readers ultimately get to choose each week’s lucky winners. Like we discussed with Nathan Gerbe’s Goal of the Week win, sometimes these voting results are a bit perplexing. One goal or save seems like one of the best clips of the season, but it doesn’t even win the weekly award. Meanwhile, a relatively normal feat ends [...]

USOC Signs Sponsorship Extension with Nike

12 April 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. —The U.S. Olympic Committee has extended its sponsorship deal with Nike, meaning American athletes will wear the swoosh on the medal stand through the 2016 Olympics. The USOC has been partners with Nike since 2005, and the company also has apparel contracts with USA Basketball, USA Track and Field and a number of other sports. It’s another multimillion-dollar deal for the USOC, which has also recently signed with Citigroup and TD Ameritrade, as it restructures a sponsorship portfolio that was temporarily hurt by the bad economy after the Beijing Olympics.
