Across the Pond: European Champion Roundup 2012

While the Stanley Cup Playoffs are gearing up for the conference semifinals, most of the top European leagues have already crowned their champions for the 2011-12 season.

The KHL’s Gagarin Cup final is going to a seventh and deciding game on Wednesday between Avangard Omsk and Dynamo Moscow. The other major circuits — including Sweden’s Elitserien, Finland’s SM-liiga, the Czech Extraliga and the Swiss National League — have concluded their postseasons.

Following is a look at the playoff outcomes and statistical leaders in the aforementioned leagues:

Hartley adds Swiss championship to trophy case

Bob Hartley is no stranger to coaching teams to championships. He guided the Colorado Avalanche to the 2000-01 Stanley Cup after previously winning the AHL’s Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears in 1996-97. He can now add the Swiss National League title to his resume.

Hartley’s ZSC Lions recently captured their seventh Swiss championship in club history and first in four years. The Zurich-based team finished seventh in the regular season, but turned it on when it really counted. The club made a statement with consecutive sweeps of second-seeded HC Davos in the first round and then top-ranked EV Zug in the semifinals.

In the finals, ZSC fell behind SC Bern, three games to one. The team staved off elimination with a 2-1 overtime win on the road in Game 5, as Mathias Seger scored the game-winner. Returning to Zurich, the Lions got points from nine different players as they blew out the Bears by a 6-3 score. Former NHL forward Domenic Pittis, who also scored a crucial regulation game in Game 5, led the way for ZSC with one goal and two helpers.

The seventh and deciding game in Bern brought a sellout crowd of 17,131 partisans. The game was scoreless until the final minute of the first period, when ZSC’s Mark Bastl got his team on the board. Ivo Rüthemann knotted the score at 1:49 of the middle period after the puck pinballed around the slot and finally ended up on Ruthemann’s stick on the doorstep.

The game remained tied throughout the third period. Overtime seemed inevitable as time ticked down below 10 seconds in regulation. Suddenly, the Lions’ Andreas Ambuhl and Jeff Tambellini created a scramble near the net. The puck went out to a wide-open Steve McCarthy, who buried the championship-clinching goal from point blank range. A mere two seconds remained on the third-period clock.

“Our team had a big belief in itself,” said Hartley to Television Suisse. “We had a lot of pride and character. We never stopped working, and a lot of different players stepped up for us. That’s what it takes to be successful in the playoffs.”

Five different ZSC players tallied 10 or more points during the playoffs. Ambuhl led the way with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) while Patrik Bartschi (nine goals, two assists) led all players in postseason goal scoring. Goaltender Lukas Flueler posted a stellar .947 save percentage in the playoffs.

Silfverberg completes magic season, joins Senators

Sporting uniform number 100 to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Brynäs IF Gävle franchise, Jakob Silfverberg finished off one of the best seasons in the recent history of Sweden’s Elitserien in style. He led the team to its 13th championship in franchise history, and first since 1999.

During the regular season, the 21-year-old forward led his team and ranked second in the league in scoring with 54 points (24 goals, 30 assists). He was the consensus league MVP, winning the Golden Helmet award. In the playoffs, Silfverberg compiled 13 goals and 20 points in 17 games to capture postseason MVP honors as well and shatter the league’s single postseason goal-scoring record, previously held by Daniel Alfredsson.

Brynäs got out to a 3-0 series lead over Skellefteå AIK in the finals, but lost the next two games. In Game 6, Silfverberg made a sharp cut and beat Joacim Eriksson to break a scoreless deadlock midway through the second period. The narrow lead held until 7:51 remained in the third period, when Ryan Gunderson, who led all defensemen in the league in regular-season scoring, ripped a point shot home for an insurance goal.

Niklas Svedberg (29 saves) took care of the rest for Brynäs, nailing down his fourth shutout of the playoffs. Svedberg concluded the postseason with a 1.70 goals-against average and .947 save percentage in 14 starts.

Playoff hero Silfverberg barely had time to enjoy the championship celebration festivities in Gävle. He left shortly thereafter to join the Ottawa Senators for their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against the New York Rangers, making his NHL debut in Game 6.

Apart from Silfverberg, his linemate, Detroit Red Wings prospect Calle Jarnkrok, helped to trigger the Brynäs offense. Silfverberg was the beneficiary of most of Jarnkrok’s 12 assists in the postseason, and the Detroit draftee also scored four goals of his own. The overall scoring leader in the postseason was SAIK’s Bud Holloway, who set a new overall playoff scoring record with 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) during the second-seeded team’s run to the finals.

JYP wins second SM-liiga title in four seasons

An also-ran for much of their 35-year existence, JYP Jyväskylä has become a regular championship contender in recent years. The club won its first championship in 2009 after finishing first in the regular season since 1991-92. Although JYP repeated as the first-place club in each of the next two seasons, it was unable to return to the finals.

This season, JYP slipped to fourth in the regular season but hit its stride in the playoffs. The team ripped through Ässät Pori in four straight games and then needed only five games to down Jokerit Helsinki in the semifinals. JYP drew the second-seeded Pelicans Lahti in the finals. After dropping the first game, 2-0, JYP won the next four games by a combined 16-8 score.

The Pelicans’ Ryan Lasch led all players with 16 points (5 goals, 11 assists) in the postseason after pacing the league in regular-season scoring as well. JYP forward Jani Tuppurainen was second with seven goals and 15 points.

Pardubice thwarts Brno in Czech finals

The improbable playoff run of HC Kometa Brno from the playoff qualification mini-series to the Extraliga finals came to an end in Game 6 of the championship round.

After shocking top-ranked HC Sparta Prague in the first round and downing second-seeded HC Plzen 1929 in five games, Brno took a two-games-to-one lead in the finals over third-ranked HC Pardubice before losing the next three games. The turning point of the finals was a 2-1 overtime win for Pardubice in the fourth game of the series.

Veteran Brno forward Tomas Divisek led all playoff scorers with 26 points (six goals, 20 goals) in 20 games. Pardubice’s Martin Bartek’s 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) ranked second. Pardubice goaltender Martin Ruzicka posted a 2.33 GAA and .928 save percentage in 12 playoff starts.

Team Takes on 2012 NFL Schedule

FLORIO/NFL – There’s much that can be said about the 2012 schedule. Since we aspire to focus not on any one team but on all 32 of them, I took a careful look at each team’s schedule and came up with one observation per team.

So here are they are. One per team. This way, no one can complain.

But someone surely will find a way to.

Bills: Their success in 2011 hasn’t translated to greater exposure in 2012. They’ll have no Monday night games, and they’ll have to flex their way into a Sunday night appearance.

Ravens: They’ll face the Steelers twice in 14 days. And while the Ravens previously have asked to not play in Pittsburgh at night, that’s precisely what will happen on the evening of November 18.

Bengals: Last year, the Bengals struggled to sell out games played at Paul Brown Stadium. This year, with the Giants and Cowboys joining the Ravens and Steelers as visitors to Cincinnati, at least half of the home games should sell out. Along with one more to be mentioned later.

Browns: The team that wanted to trade up to get Robert Griffin III will get a close look at him in the final home game of the year.

Broncos: The new darlings of the NFL thanks to the presence of Peyton Manning, the Broncos are scheduled to have five prime-time games and four 4:15 p.m. ET kickoffs on CBS.

Colts: In contrast, the team for which Peyton Manning used to play has 15 games scheduled to kick off at 1:00 p.m. ET, along with the one Thursday game in which every team will participate.

Texans: Now that they’ve mastered the Colts (sort of), the Texans won’t see them until December 16. And then again on December 30.

Jaguars: After two inexplicable appearances on MNF in 2011, the Jags won’t have a prime-time game beyond their perfunctory Thursday nighter.

Chiefs: The season starts with the first-ever clash between teams run by a pair of former Patriots executives, when the Falcons and G.M. Thomas Dimitroff come to town to face the Chiefs and G.M. Scott Pioli.

Dolphins: Between September 23 and November 11, the Dolphins have only one home game (vs. Rams), which is sandwiched between two road games, a bye, and two more road games.

Patriots: The Pats get three of their last four games on the frozen FieldTurf of Gillette Stadium.

Jets: In contrast, the Jets will play three of their final four games away from home. (Given the reception that one or both quarterbacks may be receiving by then, that could be a good thing.)

Raiders: Last year, former Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer reportedly said he would never set foot in Paul Brown Stadium again. On November 25, he will.

Steelers: They have only two home games before October 28. And they’ll probably wear those awful throwback uniforms in at least one of them.

Chargers: From September 23 through November 25, the Chargers have only one Sunday home game. (There’s a Monday night game on October 15, and a Thursday night game on November 1.)

Titans: The Titans will play only two games in their division before Thanksgiving.

Cardinals: They’d better win as many games as they can early in the year. The final nine games include the 49ers twice, at Green Bay, at Atlanta, at the Jets, at Seattle, and home games against the Lions and Bears.

Falcons: They’ll get a chance to get off to a quick start; four of their first six games will be played against the depleted AFC West.

Panthers: Sunday night is football night. But it’s not Cam Newton night. Unless the Panthers get flexed.

Bears: They’ll appear three times on Monday night football, more than any other team.

Cowboys: In 2011, they didn’t play the Giants until December 11. In 2012, they’re finished with the Giants by Halloween.

Lions: They have only three home games before Thanksgiving, with three different sets of back-to-back road games during that stretch.

Packers: Even with two home games in five days to start the season, the Packers will play three home games in December.

Vikings: They’re the only NFC team that will face Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. The good news is that they also play Blaine Gabbert.

Saints: If Drew Brees throws a touchdown pass in each of the team’s first four games, he’ll be able to break the record held by John Unitas for consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass (47) against the Chargers on NBC.

Giants: A brutal schedule that has not soft spots but trap games. Especially since two of the soft spots/trap games involve a Redskins team that swept the Giants in 2011.

Eagles: They won’t leave Pennsylvania from September 23 until November 5.

Rams: They could be 4-4 at the bye, which could put them in position for a run at the division title.

49ers: 13-3 will be very difficult to duplicate, with four games against the AFC East, four against the NFC North, and games against the Giants and Saints.

Seahawks: The Seahawks finish with home games against the 49ers and Rams, which if everything is bunched together like it was two years ago could give them an edge on winning the NFC West.

Buccaneers: The best they can hope for at the bye is 2-2, given trips to play the Giants and Cowboys in Week Three and Week Four, respectively.

Redskins: The ‘Skins have a brutal stretch to finish the year, with a final seven games that include two against the Eagles, two against the Cowboys, one against the Giants, and a game against the Ravens.

Marty Hurney Talks About Panthers’ Plans for Draft, 2012 Season

Marty Hurney talks about Panthers’ plans for draft, 2012 season

Marty Hurney Talks About Panthers Plans for Draft, 2012 Season

Last year at this time, Panthers G.M. Marty Hurney was preparing to use the first pick in the draft. And it all worked out pretty well.

Now, Hurney’s team is improving, but it still has a long way to go to get to the top of the mountain.

Hurney joined PFT Live on Wednesday to talk about the team’s plans for the draft and other issues, including whether Jonathan Stewart will be a member of the team in 2012, whether Bruce Campbell will play guard or tackle, whether the team may still re-sign tight end Jeremy Shockey, and Hurney’s thoughts on the news that the Saints had targeted last year’s first overall pick for a bounty.

Along the way, Hurney answers a pointed Twitter question submitted by a member of the Panthers’ starting offense – and Hurney shares some previously unknown details (at least by me, possibly by you) regarding the manner in which the league handles the coin flips to determine draft position.

I could say more, but then you may not check out everything Hurney had to say. If you’re a Panthers fan, it’s mandatory listening. And we have ways of finding out whether you have indeed listened. And failure to listen will jeopardize your ability to credibly refer to the team as “we”. Unless and unless the Panthers decide to sell stock in the team that doesn’t actually constitute stock in the team.

Miller Leads Hall of Fame Class of 2012

NEW ORLEANS – Reggie Miller rode his sister’s coat-tails all the way to the Hall of Fame.

The five-time All-Star joined longtime NBA coach Don Nelson and college standout Ralph Sampson on Monday as part of a 12-member class that will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September. Miller’s sister, Cheryl, was enshrined in 1995.

Miller was at home when he received the call a couple days ago that he had gained entrance to the exclusive club. He quickly called his sister, one of the pioneers of the women’s game.

“I can still hear her screaming in my ear,” Miller said with a smile.

Miller often recalls the story about how his sister would beat him in games of one-on-one growing up. It wasn’t until he’d grown to 6-foot-7 and could block Cheryl’s shot that they finally quit playing those driveway pick-up games.

“She was a role model. She is a role model. She set the bar high for the family,” Miller said, “and I’m just glad I’m on her coat-tails, dragging me along to the Hall of Fame.”

Miller certainly earned the trip in his own right.

After a standout career at UCLA, he became one of the best perimeter shooters in the history of the game. He was part of the 1996 gold medal-winning Olympic team and played more games with one franchise than any player except John Stockton and Karl Malone.

He also caused untold fits for the New York Knicks, for years the biggest rival of his Pacers.

The night at Madison Square Garden that Miller scored an improbable eight points in 8.9 seconds, almost single-handedly winning Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, is chronicled in the Peabody Award-winning documentary, “Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. the New York Knicks.”

“To be a part of this exclusive club is pretty special,” Miller said.

The club in Springfield, Mass., now includes two-time Olympic gold medalist Katrina McClain, four-time NBA champion Jamaal Wilkes, longtime college referee Hank Nichols and the All-American Red Heads- the female version of the Harlem Globetrotters.

The newcomers were joined by five members of the class who already had been announced: Nike co-founder Phil Knight, ABA star Mel Daniels, seven-time NBA All-Star Chet Walker, Olympian Don Barksdale and Lydija Alexeeva, who led the Soviet Union to two Olympic gold medals.

The class will be inducted during a ceremony scheduled for Sept. 7.

“I was sitting on my back porch, smoking a cigar, when I got the call,” said Nelson, a five-time NBA champion as a player and the winningest coach in league history.

“It was a great moment for me. I’m the luckiest man in the world,” Nelson said. “I’ve been involved with the game of basketball for over 60 years, and I’ve never had a bad day, even when we lost games. They’ve all been great days.”

The 7-foot-4 Sampson was one of the most dominant college players in history, a three-time national player of the year who led Virginia to the Final Four. He was the first overall pick in the NBA draft and a four-time All-Star before injuries finally slowed his career.

McClain was dealing with her kids at home when she learned she had been inducted in the Hall of Fame. The two-time All-American at Georgia helped the United States win Olympic gold in 1988 and 1996, and the bronze medal in 1992, blazing a trail for future WNBA stars.

The son of a Baptist minister, Wilkes was a two-time NCAA champion with UCLA and a three-time NBA All-Star. His jumper was so smooth that announcer Chick Hearn called it a “20-foot layup.”

Nichols refereed 10 Final Fours and six national championship games before coordinating officials for the NCAA, while the All-American Red Heads entertained millions of fans over the course of six decades, breaking untold social barriers along the way.

“It’s a very special time for people who have been involved in the game for a long time to be in the presence of those who have already been in inducted into the Hall of Fame,” Hall of Fame chairman Jerry Colangelo said.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino, whose team was ousted by Kentucky in the Final Four on Saturday night, was among the finalists who were passed over by the committee.

Also missing out were four-time All-Star Maurice Cheeks, former Celtics and Rockets coach Bill Fitch, four-time All-Star Bernard King and longtime college and NBA coach Dick Motta.
