Report: Reds, Joey Votto Agree to 10 Year, $225 Million Deal

Update: It’s a 10-year, $ 225 million extension, according to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale.

///

Joey Votto is under contract for $ 9.5 million this season and $ 17 million next season as part of an extension signed last winter, but Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reports that the Reds are close to signing the former MVP to a significantly longer extension.

According to Dierkes the new extension “could surpass $ 200 million” in total value, although the length and salary details aren’t known yet.

This offseason Prince Fielder, who’s 27 years old, signed a nine-year, $ 214 million contract with the Tigers and Albert Pujols, who’s 32 years old, inked a 10-year, $ 240 million deal with the Angels. Votto is 28 years old and has been every bit as productive as Fielder and Pujols during the past three seasons, hitting .318 with a .983 OPS during that time while leading the league in OPS in 2010 and on-base percentage in both 2010 and 2011.

This could mean the end of Brandon Phillips’ time in Cincinnati, as it’s hard to see the Reds having the money to keep the impending free agent second baseman around beyond this season if they’re throwing $ 200 million at Votto.

Rangers, Holland Agree to 5-Year Deal

The Texas Rangers took their first major step toward locking up their core players as they signed left-hander Derek Holland to a five-year deal.

The contract, which runs through the 2016 season, also includes club options in 2017 and 2018.

The Rangers began discussing a deal with Holland in December but the talks stalled.

Holland is coming off a breakout season in 2011. In his first full year in the Texas rotation, Holland went 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA. Holland, 25, dazzled the country in his last start in Game 4 of the World Series. He pitched 8 1/3 shutout innings against St. Louis.

Holland’s regular season also included four shutouts, the most by a Texas pitcher since 1981. Holland, who made the Opening Day roster for the first time last year, was drafted in the 25th round by the Rangers in the 2006 draft.

Texas general manager Jon Daniels said going into the offseason that lockinp up core players would be an offseason priority. Holland marks the first player the Rangers have signed this offseason that includes free-agent years.

Ducks and Spartans Agree to Home-and-Home (Yahoo! Sports)

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon and Michigan State have agreed to a home-and-home series that will open in Eugene in 2014 and go to East Lansing in 2015.

The dates of the games have not been finalized, the Ducks said.

In a previous series between the two schools, the Ducks defeated the Spartans 48-14 at Autzen Stadium in 1998, while the Spartans won their home game 27-20 in 1999. The overall series between the teams is 2-2.

West Virginia’s move to the Big 12 made way for the Oregon games on Michigan State’s schedule.

Seahawks, QB Flynn Agree to Three-Year, $26M Contract

Quarterback Matt Flynn and the Seattle Seahawks agreed to a three-year contract worth up to $ 26 million, with $ 10 million guaranteed, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Sunday.

The team later confirmed that the sides had agreed to a three-year deal but didn’t release financial terms.

“Matt Flynn’s the newest Seahawk… We’re fired up to bring him to Seattle! #AlwaysCompete,” coach Pete Carroll tweeted.

The Seahawks hope that Aaron Rodgers’ infrequently seen backup in Green Bay can become a franchise passer in the Pacific Northwest.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider was able to tap into his connections, having previously worked for the Packers before joining the Seahawks. Flynn — who also met with the Miami Dolphins this weekend — dazzled in Green Bay’s regular-season finale when he threw for six touchdowns against the Detroit Lions and was widely viewed as one of the hottest free agents on the market.

Seattle traveled this road before when it traded with Green Bay to acquire Matt Hasselbeck before the 2001 season. Hasselbeck eventually led the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance.

Nats, Zimmerman Agree to Terms

Updated Feb 26, 2012 1:36 PM ET

VIERA, Fla.

Ryan Zimmerman and the Washington Nationals have agreed to a new contract, FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal has learned.

The third baseman signed a deal for six years for $ 100 million with a club option for a seventh. Zimmerman has two seasons left on a $ 45 million, five-year contract, and the new deal, which contains a no-trade clause, will keep him with the Nationals through 2019.

Zimmerman’s agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, says the two sides “bridged multiple important gaps on major parts of the contract” during talks that extended into the night.

With work to do, Zimmerman had put off his initial deadline to get a deal done by Saturday, when the first full-squad workout of spring training was held.

He didn’t want talks to drag on, fearing it will become a distraction to a team that has some of baseball’s top young prospects and expects to make great strides in the NL East.

Zimmerman joins a short list of players signed through 2019: Albert Pujols (2021), Prince Fielder (2020), Troy Tulowitzki (2020), Ryan Braun (2020) and Matt Kemp (2019).

Zimmerman’s average salary of $ 16.7 million on the extension is the second-highest for a third baseman, after Alex Rodriguez. He is guaranteed $ 126 million over next eight seasons, and the option for the ninth year could raise the total value to $ 150 million.

Report: Astros, Jack Cust Agree to One Year Deal With Club Option

UPDATE: Put the pitchforks and torches down, Astros fans.

Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle reports that Cust will get a one-year deal with a club option for 2013. While this is a little better than what we heard a few moments ago, most expected he wouldn’t get anything more than a spring training invite.

10:56 PM: Here’s a surprising one.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Astros and Jack Cust have agreed to terms a two-year contract. You heard me right. The very same Jack Cust who batted just .213 with three home runs, 87 strikeouts and a .673 OPS over 270 plate appearances before being released by the Mariners last August.

Rosenthal speculates that Cust could be an option at designated hitter when the Astros move to the American League in 2013, but that doesn’t make this deal any less of a head-scratcher. The dude turned 33 years old yesterday, can’t play defense and his flyball and contact rates have dipped in each of the last two seasons. Two years for that? Even assuming it’s at a minimal cost, I’m stumped.

The only explanation I can come up with is that Sig Mejdal, the Astros’ new director of decision sciences, must be on vacation this week.

Giants and Pablo Sandoval Agree to a Three-Year, $17.15 Million Contract

While the Giants have some work to do in order to keep Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain for the long haul, they have at least locked up a key position player through his arbitration seasons.

The Giants just announced that they have agreed to a three-year contract with third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports that the deal is worth $ 17.15 million guaranteed and includes some performance-based incentives. He’ll make $ 3.2 million this season, $ 5.7 million in 2013 and $ 8.25 million in 2014.

Sandoval was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter after batting .315/.357/.552 with 23 home runs, 70 RBI and a .909 OPS over 117 games in 2011. The 25-year-old owns a .307/.356/.501 batting line over his first four seasons in the majors. If he can stay in shape and continue to produce similar numbers, he’ll be a tremendous bargain.

Report: Reds and Ryan Ludwick Agree to One-Year, $2.5 Million Deal

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Reds and outfielder Ryan Ludwick have agreed to a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2013. He’ll be reunited with Walt Jocketty, who was the general manager during his time in St. Louis.

According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Ludwick will make a $ 2.5 million base salary with the chance for $ 500,000 in performance-based incentives.

Ludwick batted just .237/.310/.363 with 13 home runs, 75 RBI and a .674 OPS over 139 games between the Padres and Pirates last season. The 33-year-old hasn’t enjoyed much success since leaving St. Louis as part of the Jake Westbrook trade back in 2010, but the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark should be a nice fit for his righty bat. He’ll presumably share playing time with Chris Heisey in left field this season.
