TUCSON, Ariz. (CBB/Newsfeed) — Arizona men’s basketball coach Sean Miller will lead the Wildcats at least through the 2016-17 season.
The Arizona Board of Regents approved a one-year contract extension Friday for Miller, who is 69-35 in three seasons with the Wildcats and in 2011 led the team to the Pac-10 regular-season title and the round of eight in the NCAA tournament. He was the Pac-10 coach of the year that same season.
Athletic director Greg Byrne says the program has made tremendous strides under Miller and that the future looks bright.
Miller’s incoming recruiting class is considered to be among the top recruiting classes in the nation.

FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Indians are close to agreeing to a two-year, $ 16.5 million extension with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.
The deal will run through 2014, covering Cabrera’s final year of arbitration eligibility and his first year of free agency. The 26-year-old All-Star is set to earn $ 4.55 million in 2012, his second year of arbitration.
Cabrera hit .273/.332/.460 with 25 homers, 92 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 151 games last season. Cleveland was probably hoping to lock him up longer, but they’ll settle for what looks to be a team-friendly two-year deal and revisit long-term talks down the road.
Cabrera stands to cash in big – either on the free agent market or with the Tribe – if he continues to register flashy offensive numbers. It’s not often that productive, under-30 shortstops become available.

The Rockets need all the backcourt help they can get right now. Kyle Lowry is out (and is not even being evaluated again until April 7 and he could be out for the season), Kevin Martin has had shoulder issues and Kevin McHale has not yet figured out how to clone Goran Dragic.
So the Rockets have signed journeyman Early Boykins to a 10-day contract, Marc Spears of Yahoo reports on twitter.
Boykins hasn’t played in the NBA all season – there wasn’t a D-League guy they liked better? – but he did average 7.2 points per game in 57 appearances with the Bucks last season. And he’s short (5’5″) and quick.
This is a sign of how desperate the Rockets are for some help in the backcourt.

Tom Brady was willing to lend a helping hand to the New England Patriots.
Brady restructured his contract, the Boston Herald reported Thursday, citing NFL Players Association documents.
By redoing his deal on March 16, Brady freed up roughly $ 7.2 million in cap space to assist the team in free agency.
Since Brady’s restructure, the Patriots have been busy in free agency, signing Brandon Lloyd, Donte Stallworth, Dan Connolly, Daniel Fells, Trevor Scott, Marquice Cole, Anthony Gonzalez, Will Allen, and Robert Gallery.
Brady signed a four-year, $ 72 million extension in 2010 and was set to earn $ 5.75 million in base salary in 2012. Under this restructured contract, the figure is now $ 950,000.

The Phillies released Dontrelle Willis last Friday after he allowed five runs on five hits and four walks over 2 2/3 innings this spring, but it didn’t take him long to find a new home.
As first reported by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, Willis has latched on with the Orioles on a minor league deal. Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun adds that it’s a split contract worth $ 700,000 for time spent in the majors.
Willis posted a 5.00 ERA and 57/37 K/BB ratio over 75 2/3 innings with the Reds last season, but the 30-year-old had a .127 batting average against and a 20/2 K/BB ratio against left-handed batters. The Phillies inked him to a one-year, $ 850,000 deal over the winter with the idea of using him as a left-handed specialist, but they quickly threw in the towel after he dealt with arm fatigue and was showing diminished velocity this spring. It’s not clear whether the O’s intend to use him as a starter or a reliever.

The Detroit Lions have designs on signing Cliff Avril to a long-term deal, and that was their thinking when they placed the franchise tag on their prized defensive end.
Avril and the Lions remain “far apart in negotiations,” according to MLive.com. If they can’t strike a deal, Avril stands to make around $ 10.6 million next season, the expected franchise-tag value for players at his position.
Avril warned in February that a franchise tag designation could lead to a holdout.
“There’s a lot of different possibilities, and that’s one of the possibilities — not showing up,” Avril said. “But we don’t know. That’s not the plan, obviously. But there’s a lot of different possibilities, and that’s definitely one of them.”
Because the tag is non-exclusive, it is possible for Avril to sign with another team, but the Lions can match the offer or receive two first-round picks in return if he signs elsewhere.
The 25-year-old has 19.5 sacks the past two seasons and 30 in his four-year career. He was a third-round pick out of Purdue in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Quarterback Matt Flynn and the Seattle Seahawks agreed to a three-year contract worth up to $ 26 million, with $ 10 million guaranteed, a league source told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora on Sunday.
The team later confirmed that the sides had agreed to a three-year deal but didn’t release financial terms.
“Matt Flynn’s the newest Seahawk… We’re fired up to bring him to Seattle! #AlwaysCompete,” coach Pete Carroll tweeted.
The Seahawks hope that Aaron Rodgers’ infrequently seen backup in Green Bay can become a franchise passer in the Pacific Northwest.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider was able to tap into his connections, having previously worked for the Packers before joining the Seahawks. Flynn — who also met with the Miami Dolphins this weekend — dazzled in Green Bay’s regular-season finale when he threw for six touchdowns against the Detroit Lions and was widely viewed as one of the hottest free agents on the market.
Seattle traveled this road before when it traded with Green Bay to acquire Matt Hasselbeck before the 2001 season. Hasselbeck eventually led the Seahawks to their only Super Bowl appearance.

Back in January the Angels were said to be interested in long-term contract extensions with impending free agent middle infielders Howie Kendrick and Erick Aybar.
They got a deal done with Kendrick, signing the second baseman for $ 33.5 million over four years, but talks with Aybar have stalled. Until now perhaps, as Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that Aybar’s agent is in Arizona to meet “face-to-face” with general manager Jerry Dipoto this week.
Aybar avoided arbitration with a one-year, $ 5.075 million contract and can hit the open market next offseason as a 29-year-old free agent at a position where the pickings are usually very slim, so getting him to sign long term may be tough at this point.
He also hit .279 with a .743 OPS last season, posting new career-highs in homers (10), doubles (33), runs (71), RBIs (59), and steals (30).
