Five Teams We’d Like to See on HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’

NFL Network’s Albert Breer reported Saturday the Atlanta Falcons removed themselves from consideration for HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” meaning we’re back to the drawing board.

Where to now? You won’t agree with a word of this, but here’s my top five:

1. Carolina Panthers — Two words: Cam Newton. The chance to watch one of the game’s most engaging young stars prepare for Year Two. The show hinges on head-coach charisma, and Ron Rivera has the moxie to pull this off. A young, driven team, utterly disappointed with last year’s record and anxious to show they’re better than 6-10. Sign me up.

2. Washington Redskins — A year ago, if I had to pick between (a) nine straight hours of “Wheel of Fortune” blindfolded or (b) an equal amount of backroom Redskins footage with eyes wide open, we’re talking about a coin flip. This is the power of Robert Griffin III.

3. San Francisco 49ers — At February’s combine, watching Jim Harbaugh in real time was a revelation: witty, irritated, humorous, short with reporters and mystical, all wrapped into one. “Hard Knocks” couldn’t find a better coach-reality star in 2012.

4. New York Giants — The Jets are fine television, but if they’re unwilling to take another swing at the show, let’s focus on the New York team tasked with defending the world championship, not just talking about one.

Debate: Toughest schedule

5. New Orleans Saints — Nobody will go for this, but the name of this show is “Hard Knocks.” The skinny: A team that’s made grave mistakes, now forced to fight their way out of a corner. Great character development. For the players and coaches inside this organization — the ones who had nothing to do with the “bounty” fiasco — this is the training camp I want to see.

32. Jacksonville Jaguars — I can’t find anything compelling here. I know the gallant and mustachioed Shahid Khan is probably hot for this project, but (a) they’ve already been featured on a version of the show and (b) once was enough.

Honorable mention: Houston Texans, Denver Broncos (Manning wouldn’t touch it, Elway might) and the Indianapolis Colts.

We got this all wrong, right?

Kovalainen Penalised Five Grid Spots for Sepang

Caterham’s Heikki Kovalainen will drop five places on the grid for next weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix after falling foul of the stewards during Sunday’s race in Melbourne.

Kovalainen, who retired on lap 39 at Albert Park with suspension issues, was handed the penalty for overtaking cars whilst under safety-car conditions.

Under revised safety-car rules for 2012, Kovalainen was permitted to pass other cars to unlap himself, but the Finn breached regulations by doing so before reaching the first safety-car line.

The safety-car intervention, the only one of the race, was prompted by Kovalainen’s team mate Vitaly Petrov, whose car stopped on the start-finish straight with steering problems.

Rutgers Makes Five Hires Official

 Rutgers Makes Five Hires Official

Following up on several reports over the past couple of weeks, Rutgers finally made the hiring of five assistant coaches official today.

It shouldn’t come as any great shock, but new coach Kyle Flood announced the following acquisitions: Dave Brock (offensive coordinator/wide receivers), Dave Cohen (linebackers), Darnell Dinkins (tight ends), Ben Sirmans (running backs), Rob Spence (quarterbacks) and Damian Wroblewski (offensive line).

Brock and Sirmans came from Boston College, Cohen from Western Michigan, Dinkins, coincidentally enough, from Tampa Bay, Spence from Bethune-Cookman and Wroblewski from Delaware.

Flood also promoted former special teams coach Robb Smith to defensive coordinator, and moved defensive line coach Phil Galiano to secondary coach and special teams coordinator.

Brock, Cohen, Sirmans, Spence and Wroblewski have all been linked to open vacancies at RU recently. Former Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano brought the following coaches with him from Piscataway to Tampa: P.J. Fleck* (receivers), Bob Fraser (linebackers), Brian Angelichio (tight ends) and Jeff Haley (defensive backs).

Former RU offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti went to the St. Louis Rams and running backs coach Chris Hewitt accepted a position with the Baltimore Ravens.

(*note: Fleck was the offensive coordinator for Northern Illinois for one whole day before joining Tampa Bay)

The Mets Are Close to Closing on Five of Those $20 Million Ownership Stakes

The New York Daily News reports that the New York Mets are close to sealing the deal on five of the $ 20 million shares they’ve been trying to sell. The owners have been approved by Major League Baseball and the deals could close by the end of the month. The Daily News:

With that, the team would raise enough capital to repay $ 25 million owned to MLB, a $ 40 million bridge loan to Bank of America and other club debts and operating expenses that have emerged in the wake of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme scandal.

There is a reported overall total of $ 350 million in debt – and the team has reportedly lost money in recent years – so that doesn’t handle everything. But it’s better than nothing.

Now, I’d just like to get a gander at the sort of person who gives the Mets $ 20 million for perks that are basically not much better than being a season ticket holder.

Fuente Adds Five Assistants to Memphis Coaching Staff

Fuente Adds Five Assistants to Memphis Coaching Staff

A little less than two weeks after his hiring, Justin Fuente‘s first coaching staff at Memphis is beginning to take shape.

In a release, the school announced that Fuente has hired five new assistants – Barry Odom (defensive coordinator/safeties), Vance Vice (offensive line), Holman Wiggins (running backs), James Shibest (special teams/tight ends) and Chris Vaughn (cornerbacks).

Odom had spent the past nine seasons at Missouri and represents arguably the most important hire for Fuente, who leans heavily toward the offensive side as a coach. Shibest and Vaughn were members of Houston Nutt’s Ole Miss staff the past couple of years.

These additions come shortly after it was reported that co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Galen Scott had been retained by Fuente.

Good god. The Vikings have actually done something that makes sense. Clearly, the Mayans were correct and the end of the world is right around the corner.

Five Fights That Could Still Compete for ‘Fight of the Year’

9eb07 five fights that could still compete for fight of the year Five Fights That Could Still Compete for Fight of the Year

In a week’s span, MMA fans were treated to three memorable fights. Dan Henderson’s decision win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Michael Chandler’s upset of Eddie Alvarez, and Benson Henderson’s win over Clay Guida are all Fight of the Year contenders. However, the year isn’t over. These five fights all have a shot at blowing the fight world’s mind.

Eduardo Dantas vs. Alexis Vila at Bellator 59: Vila was seen as “just” an Olympic-medal winning wrestler until he knocked Joe Warren stiff in the quarterfinals of Bellator’s bantamweight tournament. Dantas, nicknamed Dudu, made it through Ed West and after beating Wilson Reis with a flying knee. This fight has fun written all over it. Plus, Dantas is nicknamed Dudu.

Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung at UFC 140: The man who fought through a lump on his head the size of a small child is taking on “The Korean Zombie.” Neither fighter knows how to quit. Add in that Hominick will be fighting close to home and that this will be his first fight since his longtime coach Shawn Tompkins passed away, and this will be a fight you won’t want to miss.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal at Strikeforce: Melendez was hoping that he would get the next UFC lightweight title shot, but that was earned by Benson Henderson. Melendez will both want to take his anger out on being passed over, and show the UFC that he is worthy.

Donald Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz at UFC 141: When at lightweight, Nate Diaz’s reach and grappling prowess usually give him an edge. Donald Cerrone’s height, reach and jiu-jitsu can neutralize that advantage. Between the two fighters, they have 10 Fight of the Night bonuses. This bout has the chance to steal thunder from the headliner at UFC 141. Speaking of which …

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem at UFC 141: Heavyweight bouts can be hit or miss, but this one is destined to be a hit. Overeem is finally in the UFC and has been training with Xtreme Couture to shore up his wrestling game. Lesnar will be back for the first time since losing his heavyweight title. Both can throw punches with the power of a Mack truck.

What fights are you most looking forward to as the year closes out? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.
