2 Western Kentucky Football Players Shot

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. Two Western Kentucky football players are recovering after being wounded by gunshots outside a bar.

A statement from the school’s athletic department says defensive lineman Tevin Holliman and defensive back Ricardo Singh were each hit once, and their wounds weren’t life-threatening.

The shooting early Sunday outside the Lava Lounge in Bowling Green happened hours after the team played its annual spring game.

Bowling Green Police spokesman Ronnie Ward said it appears someone shot into a crowd outside the bar and struck the players. He said an officer driving by the scene heard gunshots and called for backup at 12:39 a.m.

Holliman is a sophomore from Tucker, Ga., and Singh is a freshman from Auburndale, Fla.

The school’s statement said coach Willie Taggart has spoken to the parents of both players.

UM Fires Football Coach, Athletic Director

HELENA, Mont. – The University of Montana fired football coach Robin Pflugrad and athletic director Jim O’Day on Thursday, adding more uncertainty to a program already dealing with sexual assault allegations against two players.

“The University of Montana has determined not to renew the contracts of Athletics Director Jim O’Day and head football coach Robin Pflugrad,” university President Royce Engstrom said in a statement.

O’Day and Engstrom addressed staff and coaches in separate meetings Thursday morning, but neither gave a reason for the firings, said Greg Sundberg, the Montana Grizzly Scholarship Association executive director, who attended the meetings.

“I think it was time for a leadership change, is what I gathered,” Sundberg said.

Engstrom’s statement thanked O’Day and Pflugrad for their service and said the university plans to announce an interim coach and athletic director by the end of the week.

The Missoulian first reported the story on Thursday morning. O’Day told the newspaper that he and Pflugrad were shocked by the news, but they understand that is part of the business.

“I’m sure the president has been reviewing all the different things that have been going on for some time and just decided, both in leadership of the department and in leadership of the football program, it was time to make a change,” O’Day said.

The firings cap six months of tumult for the university and the football program.

Earlier this month, a university student accused starting quarterback Jordan Johnson of sexually assaulting her. No charges have been filed.

Johnson was temporarily suspended from spring practice while a temporary restraining order was issued against him. After the restraining order was dissolved last week to be replaced by a civil no-contact agreement, Johnson was allowed to participate in a Saturday scrimmage.

Pflugrad welcomed him back to the field, calling Johnson a person of “tremendous moral fiber” in a statement that was criticized by the alleged victim’s attorney.

In January, running back Beau Donaldson was suspended from the team after he was charged with raping an acquaintance in September 2010. He has pleaded not guilty.

Last fall, police used a stun gun against two football players after quarterback Gerald Kemp and cornerback Trumaine Johnson scuffled with officers responding to a noise complaint. They pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct charges.

Sundberg said none of those allegations were raised at the meetings Thursday.

Pflugrad was the Big Sky Conference football coach of the year in 2011 after he guided the Grizzlies to a co-conference championship in his second year as coach. Sam Houston State defeated Montana in the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Pflugrad was promoted from wide receivers coach to head coach after Bobby Hauck left for UNLV in 2009. It was Pflugrad’s second stint with the Grizzlies, after being an assistant coach from 1986 to 1994. In between, he coached and recruited at Oregon, Washington State and Arizona State, and he previously coached at Portland State.

Montana went 7-4 in his first season in 2010.

O’Day was hired as athletic director in 2005, moving up from director of development for UM intercollegiate athletics after Don Read retired.

BC Football Player Charged in Secret Sex Recording

BOSTON – A Boston College football player has been charged with secretly making an audio recording of two students having sex.

Backup defensive lineman Jaryd Rudolph was released on his own recognizance Wednesday after pleading not guilty to violating the state’s wiretap statute.

Attorney Mitchell Garabedian, who represents a female Boston College graduate student, said neither his client nor her partner- another BC player- knew of a Feb. 15 cell phone recording. He said she learned about it after Rudolph distributed it and she was mocked by other students.

Rudolph’s attorney, John Seed, said his client is innocent and there’s a question of whether the recording even exists.

Boston College said 19-year-old Rudolph is on probation and suspended from the team.

The maximum prison sentence upon conviction is 2 1/2 years.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolna’s two-sport standout Bruce Ellington is giving up football to concentrate on basketball.

Ellington said Monday that basketball was his first love and he wanted to focus on that sport full time.

The basketball team went 10-21, its season ending last week with a first-round loss to Alabama at the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Ellington earned Freshman All-SEC honors in football, gaining 707 all-purpose yards. He was South Carolina’s second-leading scorer in basketball, averaging 11 points in 24 games.

Sun Devil Dropping Hoops to Pursue Football Career

After two years as a member of the Arizona State basketball team, Chanse Creekmur is leaving both the sport and the school.

The 6-7, 205-pound forward confirmed to the Arizona Republic that he will transfer from the Sun Devils to pursue a career in football at the collegiate level. Creekmur is from Marshalltown, Iowa, and wants to transfer to a school closer to his hometown.

“I’m just having a change of heart,” Creekmur said. “It’s just something I want to do, to see if I can still play or not,” Creekmur told the paper. “I want to see how far I can go because my recruiting caught up late (in high school). I’ve always loved playing football.”

Creekmur had verbally committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball program in August of 2008 before signing with the Sun Devils in April of 2010. At the time of his signing a hoops Letter of Intent, it was noted by Rivals.com that Creekmur had “considered playing Division I football as a quarterback.”

As a senior at Marshalltown High School, Creekmur quarterbacked his team to an appearance in the 2009 state title game. According to the Marshalltown Times-Republican, Creekmur “set single-season Class 4A records in completions, yardage and passing touchdowns” that year.

He was pursued by smaller programs as a football player coming out of high school, the Republic wrote.

How much if any interest Creekmur, who said he would be open to being a two-sport player at his new school, will garner from Div. 1-A programs remains to be seen.

SD State Football Player Charged in Beating (Yahoo! Sports)

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State defensive lineman Dontrell Onuoha (on-oo-OH’-ha) has been charged with a pair of felonies in connection with the beating of a fraternity member near campus in September.

The San Diego District Attorney’s Office charged Onuoha- a 20-year-old sophomore- with felony assault and felony battery Thursday. The charges could carry a combined seven years in prison.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune (http://bit.ly/xJTsiM), a police report says Onuoha was with a group of men who approached the lone victim, who was punched in the head and suffered broken bones around his eye and partial loss of vision. It’s not clear how many people hit him.

The report says the victim belonged to a fraternity that wouldn’t allow a group of football players into a party.

Polian Says Colts WR Wayne Still ‘Has Brilliant Football Mind’

Former Indianapolis Colts executive Bill Polian said Thursday that he wouldn’t be surprised to see long-time receiver Reggie Wayne explore the free-agent market.

“I think Reggie will at least be allowed to go out and test the waters,” Polian said on Sirius XM NFL Radio, according to FoxSports.com. “Now, will Reggie get something that he likes? I don’t know.”

According to FoxSports.com, Polian had a hand in the Colts’ offseason strategy before he was let go by the team.

Polian said that while Wayne is “an institution in Indianapolis,” the receiver “has to maximize his earning power because he’s closer to the end of his career than the beginning.

“It may well be that someone has more cap room or money than the Colts can offer him. They’re very tight on the cap this year.”

The 33-year-old Wayne registered fewer than 1,000 yards receiving (960 on 75 catches) last season for the first time since the 2003 season. His four touchdowns matched his output from 2002, when he started just seven games.

“Reggie doesn’t run with as much speed and explosion as he once did but he has phenomenal hands,” Polian said. “He really can set up defensive backs. When you talk about a team, for example, like the (New York) Jets, that (has) plenty of speed but not enough people who can really get open and make plays in clutch situations, particularly from a hands standpoint, Reggie would be a perfect fit there.”

Wayne has said that his first choice would be to stay in Indianapolis, but as of early February he had yet to hear from the team.

Polian suggested that if quarterback Peyton Manning ends up leaving the Colts, whichever team Manning lands with would do well to “consider Reggie Wayne,” who, he added, “has a brilliant football mind.”
