Ducks at Stanford in Pac-12 Game of Year

STANFORD, Calif. – Andrew Luck insists his dorm room doesn’t have a calendar. He doesn’t wear a watch, and his outdated cellphone doesn’t even show the day of the week.

Luck needs no reminder about Nov. 12.

Since he announced in a one-sentence news release in January that he would return to school, Luck instantly put Stanford and Oregon on a collision course for that date. Everything for both sides has been building toward the moment.

Finally, it’s here.

Luck leads No. 3 Stanford against lightning-quick LaMichael James and sixth-ranked Oregon in the Pac-12-s showdown of the season Saturday night, shifting attention to the West Coast for a game that could decide the eventual league champion and keep the winner in the national title mix.

“When you’re thinking about the upcoming football season, you’re thinking about Oregon,” Luck said. “If you want to do something on the West Coast, you’ve got to beat Oregon. They’ve been the best team the last couple of years.”

Luck should know.

Stanford is riding the nation’s longest winning streak at 17 games, with the last loss coming at Eugene more than a year ago. Oregon stifled Stanford’s offense in the second half in that contest, rallying from an early 18-point deficit for a 52-31 victory that helped carry the Ducks to the BCS championship game, where they lost to Auburn.

The implications this year loom large again.

Stanford can clinch the North Division crown and the opportunity to host the inaugural league championship game with a victory, while Oregon (8-1, 6-0) also would need to win one of its final two league games. The Cardinal (9-0, 7-0) have a chance to remain undefeated and stay in the top of the chase for a national title behind top-ranked LSU and No. 2 Oklahoma State.

“They love the challenge,” Oregon coach Chip Kelly said of his players. “Andrew Luck is the best quarterback in the country, but I don’t think they ever think they’re in over their heads against anybody.”

The attention is almost unprecedented on The Farm.

The game is the first matchup of Top-10 teams at Stanford Stadium and the first in the Bay Area since No. 3 Washington beat No. 7 California in Berkeley in 1991. About 400 media credentials have been granted- more than twice the usual, with the vast majority for extra television and production crews- and a red-wine sipping, tree-loving Cardinal crowd is expected to swarm the Silicon Valley campus.

The attention on college football is at a fever pitch in the pro-saturated Bay Area market.

Jim Plunkett, who in 1970 became Stanford’s only Heisman Trophy winner, couldn’t even hit golf balls on the San Francisco peninsula this week without buddies at his club asking about his Cardinal’s chances.

“It’s on everybody’s mind, it’s on everybody’s lips,” Plunkett said. “Most people think this is the biggest game Stanford has played in a long time.”

Fans should get quite a show.

The contrasting offenses promise points- unlike top-ranked LSU’s 9-6 victory over previously No. 2 Alabama last week. Stanford averages 48 points and Oregon 46 points per game.

While Luck anchors a prolific passing game, the Cardinal count on a powerful pro-style offense and a bull-dozing line to push opponents around. The Ducks’ spread-option, no-huddle headlined by James and quarterback Darron Thomas relies on speed and misdirection.

“Kind of amped up, but really just focused,” Thomas said. “I’ll be amped up on Saturday.”

Keeping composure could be the biggest challenge for both teams.

The winner in this matchup has scored at least 50 points the last two years with wild, wacky swings in scores normally reserved for video games. Both seemingly blowout contests flipped in a hurry.

Two years ago at Stanford Stadium, the Cardinal jumped out to a 17-point first-half lead and held on for a 51-42 victory. But they blew an early 21-3 cushion last season in Eugene and lost 52-31, the only blemish during an otherwise perfect two years.

First-year Stanford coach David Shaw insists he isn’t worried about nerves and excitement rattling him or his players.

Shaw credits the low-key atmosphere on the grounds of the rigorous academics university for keeping players focused. In a place filled with former and future world diplomats, Internet innovators and other great minds, football is often secondary.

“This campus does a great job of keeping your perspective,” Shaw said. “There are spots on campus where businesses are being created. I talked to a doctor who’s working on campus, and they’re working on the steps toward curing cancer. Stanford vs. Oregon is not high on his list this week.

“Now,” Shaw added, “he’s going to be at the game. But he’s got a lot of stuff to do between now and then.”

Ravens’ Suggs Talks a Good Game Ahead of Steelers Showdown

Never one to hide his thoughts, particularly when it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs expounded Wednesday on the Ravens’ upcoming rematch with their AFC North rivals.

“There is the Super Bowl and then there is Ravens-Steelers. Everybody will be watching this game,” Suggs said, the Baltimore Sun reported.

“We have been declared war upon. We are the enemy of the state,” Suggs said. “[Heinz Field] is my Madison Square Garden. I love playing in this stadium, I love the way the people treat me, the welcoming they give me with the No. 1-s. I love it. We’re going on the road in probably the toughest stadium to play in the NFL. We’re expecting a physical football game. This is football. I’m guaranteeing the NFL, the world will stop for this game, and everybody wants to see it. We will be ready.”

Suggs also had some provocative words for veteran Pittsburgh receiver Hines Ward, who sat out last Sunday’s Steelers victory over New England with an ankle injury.

“I’m looking right at you 86. I need you to play,” Suggs said, looking into a video camera. “Please put on that 86, that smile and all the things you do. We need all that for this game.”

The Ravens opened the season with a 35-7 win over the Steelers in Baltimore — a game in which Suggs had three sacks of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger — but Suggs said there’ll motivation on both sides Sunday.

“They’re definitely going to have some ‘Let’s get after them’ to their game. But in hindsight, who knocked us out of the playoffs last year? In 2008, a certain team beat us to go to the Super Bowl, and danced all over the field, held up the AFC Championship trophy. We had to sit by and watch that. There’s a little salt in the wound on both sides.”

Game 7 of World Series Was Most Watched Baseball Game Since 2004

Jon Weisman of Variety and the excellent Dodger Thoughts brings word that Game 7 of the World Series between the Rangers and Cardinals drew 23.2 million viewers last night according to preliminary Nielsen estimates, making it the most watched baseball game in seven years.

Weisman notes that the audience could go up by more than a million when a more precise reading is released later this afternoon, but it will almost certainly fall short of Game 4 of the 2004 World Series, which drew 28.8 million viewers when the Red Sox swept the Cardinals to win their first World Championship since 1918.

Game 6 on Thursday night had more than 21 million viewers, so we’re not talking about a tremendous jump here, but while FOX may have garnered bigger ratings if Wednesday’s rainout didn’t ultimately push Game 7 to a Friday, they have to be thrilled this series built buzz throughout and went the distance.

Blame Game: Ex-Raiders QB Russell Can’t Own Up to His Failures

Is there anything JaMarcus Russell could say now to repair his image? Anything at all that could convince people he’s not the biggest draft bust in NFL history?

The Raiders’ 2007 No. 1 overall pick is 26 years old and out of football. And in this week’s edition of Sports Illustrated, Russell tells his side of the story as to why his short-lived career in Oakland was a complete disaster.

Addressing previous reports that he would fall asleep during team meetings as a rookie, Russell said it was a result of having sleep apnea.

“In the NFL, my first year, I had to be there at 6:30 (a.m.) before practice and be on the treadmill for an hour,” Russell said. “Then meetings come, I sit down, eat my fruit. We watch film, and maybe I got tired. Coach Flip (quarterback coach John DeFilippo) pulled me aside and said, ‘What are you doing for nightlife?’ I said, ‘Coach, I’m just chilling.’ He said, ‘I need to get you checked out.’ I did the sleep test, and they said I had apnea.”

Clearly, Russell’s career got off to a bad start — and only worsened. After Lane Kiffin was fired in 2008, new Raiders coach Tom Cable apparently didn’t help matters much. Now, Russell said he feels betrayed by Cable, who’s now with the Seattle Seahawks after being let go in Oakland.

“I stuck my neck out for him,” Russell said. “Didn’t complain when he benched me as the starter. Didn’t complain when he called the same plays five damn times. Didn’t (badmouth) him to other coaches. When the (media) asks me, I say, ‘He’s a good coach, a good guy.’ Then I hear he says I was the worst thing that ever happened to the Raiders, if it weren’t for (me) we’d be in the playoffs? … It just got to where the game wasn’t fun for me.”

Russell, who went 7-18 as a starter before being released after the 2009 season, also said he hates the fact that he’s the face of the Raiders’ losing during his three years with the team.

“Things weren’t going right, and it felt sometimes like everything fell back on me,” he said. “I take some responsibility, but I was one guy. … I may have missed a throw, but I didn’t give up 42 points. I didn’t miss a block.”

Ah, but Russell did hold out into Week 1 as a rookie, and did show up to minicamp one offseason weighing nearly 300 pounds, and did throw more interceptions (23) than touchdowns (18), and did finish with a career 65.2 passer rating.

It appears Russell is pointing the finger at other people for his own failures. Even if that wasn’t his intention (and maybe all he wanted to do was vent), it’s how folks likely will interpret his words. So, really, when you think about it, if Russell wanted to repair his image (although he did discuss his selfless giving to his hometown of Mobile, Ala.), the best thing he could’ve done was man up — or remain out of the news altogether by keeping quiet.

Too late for that.

Suggs on Ravens’ Loss: ‘I Don’t Know What the Game Plan Was’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Stifling stops against the run. Relentless pressure on the quarterback. A struggle just to make a first down. It was the kind of defense expected when the Baltimore Ravens play.

Only this time, it happened to them.

The Ravens (4-2) pitched the wrong kind of shutout Monday night in a 12-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars when they went an entire half without getting a first down, and didn’t have a drive lasting more than three plays until late in the third quarter.

Joe Flacco completed two straight passes for negative yards, one that he caught himself. Ray Rice carried only eight times for 28 yards, with only one run longer than 4 yards.

“It’s about as bad as you can play on offense,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said.

Flacco threw for just 137 yards on the night and expects to take the brunt of the blame for this miserable performance.

“They look at the quarterback when things are good, and they look at the quarterback when things are bad,” Flacco said. “We weren’t playing consistently on offense. It’s going to get better. We’re a young team. We need to make sure when we’re not on our ‘A’ game, we’re not this.”

Baltimore, which came into the game averaging 375.2 yards a game, finished with 146 yards.

Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs wasn’t happy that Rice had eight carries to 30 for Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew. “It baffles me,” Suggs said. “They fed their horse. We’ve got to feed our horse. But don’t forget to give credit to Jacksonville.”

“I don’t really know what the game plan was,” Suggs said. “But when I have a Pro Bowl running back and I see he’s not getting his touches, I’m going to feel a certain way about it. He’s a good guy, he wants the ball, and I think we should feed him. Ray Rice, he’s a phenomenal player, and you’ve got to use your phenomenal players.

“I’ve got to question how many catches Anquan (Boldin) had. We’ve got guys on this team who can do some great things. We got to use those guys. It’s that simple.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Albert Pujols Tallies a Record 14 Total Bases, Cardinals Win 16-7 in World Series Game 3

Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols drew heavy amounts of criticism for leaving the Busch Stadium clubhouse before talking to the media following Thursday’s Game 2 loss. A few national baseball writers even questioned his leadership, given that younger players like Jason Motte, Jon Jay and Allen Craig were left to handle all of the heat.

Let’s go ahead and toss that narrative aside. It never really made much sense in the first place.

Pujols put together one of the greatest single-game performances in World Series history during Saturday night’s 16-7 Game 3 trouncing of the Rangers, finishing 5-for-6 with three home runs, six RBI and four runs scored. He tallied 14 total bases, breaking a longstanding Fall Classic record and vaulting himself into the elite rung of postseason performers.

Babe Ruth. Reggie Jackson. Albert Pujols.

Those are the only three men in the history of baseball to launch three home runs in a World Series game.

Leadership — true leadership — is something that has to be built and then cultivated through consistent, physical examples. It’s never been established through words alone, nor has it ever been betrayed by a single, rare mistake. What Pujols did Thursday night in St. Louis was wrong. Answering questions is part of being a professional. But to suggest that the other players in the Cardinals’ dugout somehow lost faith or respect in baseball’s greatest right-handed slugger was a stretch from the start. A failed assumption.

Pujols left no doubt on Saturday night in Arlington, Texas, with those scribes who questioned him looking on in awe. He answered the call and then some. And now his Cardinals hold an improbable 2-1 lead in the seven-game Fall Classic. Have we mentioned, already, that this series has the feel of an instant classic?
