Knicks’ Davis Knee Injury Requires Surgery

NEW YORK (NBA/Newsfed) — Knicks’ guard Baron Davis will undergo surgery later this week after an MRI on Monday revealed major damage to his right knee, according to the Knicks.

Davis, whose right knee buckled in the third quarter Sunday in Game 4 of the playoff series with the Miami Heat, has a partial tear of the patella tendon and complete tears of the anterior cruciate and medial collateral knee ligaments. Recovery from the surgery will take about 12 months.

Davis, who has battled injuries all season, is the latest Knicks guard lost to an injury. Jeremy Lin is still out after knee surgery, and Iman Shumpert was lost for the season with a torn ACL in Game 1.

Davis, 33, also has suffered from a herniated disk in his back, so the injury could be career threatening.

Deng’s Wrist Injury Could Linger

CHICAGO (HELIN/NBA) – Luol Deng is playing through a torn ligament in his left wrist – surgery now would mean missing the Bulls playoff run and he wants to be part of (and is essential to) what could be a special run.

But he also has plans to play for Great Britain this summer as they host the 2012 London Olympics. He grew up in England and is the best player in that nation. It’s another great honor he doesn’t want to miss.

But now we are into August or later and surgery on the wrist would take a couple months to fully heal. Which makes things sticky for Bulls management, as Mark Schanowski discusses at CSNChicago.com.

There’s also the question of whether surgery will be absolutely necessary. Some ligaments will heal on their own over time, and doctors really aren’t sure how Luol’s wrist will look after going through the NBA playoffs and the Olympics. But if Deng does need surgery sometime in September, he could easily miss the first two months of the next NBA season, something that has to be troubling to Bulls’ management.

Playing through the wrist injury Deng has looked himself some games, other he seems to only want to use his right hand. He’s not the same player every night.

The Bulls are going into these playoffs with that Deng and Derrick Rose trying to get healthy. How far they go may depend on how good those two feel.

But the thought of starting next season already on the injury roller coaster has to make Bulls fans roll their eyes.

Clemson LB Out for Spring with Finger Injury

Clemson LB out for spring with finger injury

Florida State won’t be the only ACC team losing a linebacker for the rest of this spring. Joining the likes of Vince Williams, Clemson linebacker Stephone Anthony (pictured, No. 12) will miss the remainder of spring because of a finger injury.

An official release from the school states that Anthony has a torn ligament from the injury, which happened earlier this week, and will need surgery to repair it. Barring a complication, he should be back in time for fall camp.

Anthony had 32 tackles last season in 13 games last season.

MTSU WR Suffers Shoulder Injury, Out ‘A While’

MTSU WR suffers shoulder injury, out ‘a while’

MTSU WR Suffers Shoulder Injury, Out a While

We know, we know. Slow news day.

But Saturday’s practice was more eventful for Middle Tennessee coach Rick Stockstill, who saw one of his new early enrollees leave with a pretty bad shoulder injury.

Via a tweet courtesy of Blue Raiders beat writer Adam Sparks, former JUCO wide receiver Marcus Henry suffered a separated shoulder in his first practice with the school. Sparks would only elaborate that Henry would be out “a while”; no one from MTSU has given a definite timetable for how long Henry could be sidelined.

Henry was a two-star recruit (Rivals.com) in MTSU’s 2012 class from Northwest Mississippi College. In nine games last season, Henry pulled in 46 receptions for 745 yards and nine touchdowns.

Woods WDs from Cadillac Championship with Injury

Tiger Woods withdrew from the WGC Cadillac Championship on Sunday after 11 holes of his final round. As Woods drove off in his car, he said it was a “left leg injury.” In a later statement, Woods clarified that the problem was with the Achilles tendon in his left ankle, one of the problems that caused him to miss a large chunk of the 2011 season.

An update posted on tigerwoods.com includes this account:

“He had tightness in the left Achilles warming up and it got progressively worse as the round went on,” said his office in a prepared statement. Woods, who was competing for the third-consecutive week, changed shoes at the turn and was noticeably limping on the 10th and 11th holes. “After hitting my tee shot on 12, I felt it was necessary to withdraw,” Woods said. “In the past, I would have continued to play, but this time I decided to do what I thought was necessary.” … “I’ll get my Achilles evaluated sometime early next week,” he said.

Woods showed discomfort during different parts of the round and changed shoes at the turn. After hitting an iron on the 10th hole, he began limping. He completed the 11th hole, after which he was 3-over par for the round, and teed off on No. 12. Then he withdrew.

Woods was driven in a golf cart directly to his car, where he waited on tournament medical staff to deliver ice packs. He then left the course.

It might seem as if Tiger has withdraw from a ton of tournaments lately, but in fact this is just the fifth time in Woods’ pro career he was withdraw from a tournament in progress. Those five tournaments are:

  • 2012 WGC Cadillac Championship
  • 2011 Players Championship
  • 2010 Players Championship
  • 2006 Northern Trust Open
  • 1998 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

That’s a WD in each of the past three years in Florida tournaments. The Players Championship withdrawal last year was due to his left knee; the 2010 Players Championship WD was because of a neck problem. At the 2006 Northern Trust Open, Woods had the flu. And the 1998 Pebble Beach Pro-Am WD was a scheduling issue after rain postponed completion of the event until later in the year.

Hungarian Weightlifter Back from Horrific Injury

OROSZLANY, Hungary – Images of Janos Baranyai dislocating his elbow at the 2008 Olympics have been viewed more than 15 million times on YouTube.

The Hungarian weightlifter, however, has only seen it twice.

Janos Baranyai, of Hungary, grimaces on the platform after dislocating his right elbow while attempting to lift 148 kilograms in the snatch of the Group B of the men’s 77 kg of the weightlifting competition at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Baranyai’s right elbow popped out of its socket as he was attempting to snatch 148 kilograms (326.3 pounds) in the men’s 77-kilogram division at the Beijing Olympics, tearing ligaments and muscle.

His elbow was reset by doctors in China without the need for surgery and Baranyai spent three weeks in the hospital doing rehabilitation work after returning to Hungary.

“The reason I watched the video was to see what my mistake had been,” the 27-year-old Baranyai said. “I didn’t find any mistakes and I’d do it over in exactly the same way. To this day, I don’t know what the problem was.”

Baranyai’s right forearm bent backward as he crouched and lifted the barbell over his head. After his elbow gave out, he fell forward screaming in pain with his lower arm hanging at an impossible angle. Adding to the suffering, the barbell fell on his back.

“I’ve never felt such pain,” Baranyai told The Associated Press during interviews in his home and at the nearby gym where he trains with the hope of qualifying for the London Olympics. “I’m not a delicate kid, but that was brutal.”

Despite the severity of the injury, Baranyai seems to carry no scars. There are none on his elbow because doctors were able to forgo surgery, and his psyche appears just as unblemished.

“Spiritually, this injury did not break me at all,” Baranyai said. “I never think about it … even now when I lift larger weights. It never occurs to me what would happen if my elbow were to give again.”

The only visible reminder on his elbow is a tattoo – “Beijing 2008″ over the five Olympic rings.

“Of course, I still have memories of it, but I had the tattoo put on a few months after the injury,” Baranyai said.

He began lifting weights again about six months after Beijing, when his elbow was feeling better but his back was still sore.

“My spine was very painful for more than half a year. Every time I touched it, I could feel the mark” of the barbell.

Imre Dobos, the president of the Hungarian Weightlifting Federation, said he was amazed by Baranyai’s resiliency.

“His injury was severe and very rare,” Dobos said. “It is his tremendous spiritual strength which has helped him overcome it. Many believed that he would be scared of the weights, which is usually the case.”

It was 4 a.m. in Hungary when Baranyai’s parents and older sister saw the accident while watching the live broadcast from Beijing. Three hours went by before they were able to get news of his condition.

“My mother would have been happier if I’d retired but by now she has resigned herself to my plans,” Baranyai said.

He was back to full strength in about a year and returned to international competition in 2010. Moving up to the 85-kilogram category, Baranyai finished seventh at the European championships and 15th at the world championships that year.

Baranyai’s hometown of Oroszlany is a city of 22,000 people about 75 kilometers (46 miles) west of Budapest. During communism, it was renowned for its coal mines, but all except one have since shut down. The city’s landscape is also blemished by the brutal central planning schemes of the earlier era, with gray housing projects quashing the traditional single-family homes.

Oroszlany’s struggles are also reflected in the gym where Baranyai and the rest of the team trains, a rectangular room with peeling paint, dusty floors and worn-out weight sets. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Oroszlany’s weightlifting club has produced a string of quality athletes, including Baranyai’s father, a junior world champion in 1981.

An earthquake in the region in January 2011 was strong enough to knock down Baranyai’s large collection trophies off the shelf and for months he was forced to work out in the family garage because the team he competed for during several years – from the eastern city of Nyiregyhaza – was unable to pay his gym fees.

Now back with the Oroszlany club, Baranyai still uses the garage for morning lifting sessions and has his sights on April’s European Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

Dobos said that a medal there would practically ensure Baranyai a place at the Olympics in London, with his return from such serious injury also supported by the International Fair Play Committee.

Right now, Baranyai’s biggest challenge seems to be adding some weight to his muscular frame.

“I’m at 85 kilograms right now, but my ideal training weight would be 87,” Baranyai said. “I need to get stronger.”

Baranyai, also a former national junior judo champion, will be 28 by the time of the London Olympics, but he hopes to continue his career until at least the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“At my age, there would be time another four-year cycle. I’m not too old yet,” Baranyai said. “Unless some serious injury comes along, I can continue this sport until Rio.”
