D.C. United did not have a positive start to the 2012 season. With all the excitement generated by new additions and the building of depth, the fans in the stands were ready for some offensive fireworks. What we got instead was one colossal dud of an attack. The closest the team got to scoring was a Chris Pontius shot that went 5 feet left.
One would hope that we would see a better effort on March 18, when the team travels to play the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, recent news from United could hurt their chances of being able to right the ship in the short term. The team announced that Bill Hamid and Perry Kitchen have departed for the U.S. under-23 national team camp in Nashville ahead of the Olympic qualifiers. To compound the pain, Honduras is calling up Andy Najar for the same reason.
United fans can understand my angst. Bill Hamid was the reason we had a chance late in the K.C. contest. Hamid played like a goalie that will be playing on the international stage soon, and gave the team a legitimate chance to win. Now we head off to L.A. to face the MLS version of the N.Y. Yankees. The Galaxy have money reserves everywhere and will give it to any famous name.
Those who read my pieces know I detest this whole scheduling setup. Every event in the soccer world is more important than MLS regular season matches. How does a fan base get excited about its players when they can be sent away at any moment? Hamid and Kitchen will be out for three matches, and Najar for possibly two. These are three essential components for this team.
The league plays one match a week usually. While this tournament is going on, matches should be postponed and put into weeks later on in the season. These guys can play multiple matches in a week. Instead, D.C. United goes in severely short-handed against the MLS champs. That does not seem to be a fair shake to me.
I was also unhappy to hear that Ryan Richter was being let go, after his two-month tryout with the team. Richter was clearly one of the best players in training camp and exhibition games. He scored goals and played a solid brand of soccer. I was sure he would be signed, but instead the team went with Lewis Neal. Neal is a 30-year-old Englishman, who has nothing in his background to suggest being successful with United.
