Murray State Football Player Dies

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (CFB/Newsfeed) — A Murray State football player has died in Elizabethtown, where he had returned after his first year.

Elizabethtown police Sgt. David Neary confirmed Friday that Jeff Richard died Thursday but gave no further details.

The Hardin County coroner’s office didn’t immediately return a call Friday.

The university said Richard, a defensive end, appeared in all 11 games last year, starting in the final three games of the season and finishing with 21 tackles, including five tackles for loss and a sack. Highlights include a blocked punt against Tennessee-Martin and recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown against Mississippi Valley State.

Richard played high school ball at John Hardin.

Steve Smith: Saints Player Admitted He Targeted Me

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith wasn’t surprised at all when the New Orleans Saints’ bounty program came to light this offseason. The longtime NFC South rival said he’s “always known” Gregg Williams’ defenses try to hurt opposing players.

“I actually had an altercation with a guy who told me firsthand,” Smith said Tuesday on NFL.com’s “Dave Dameshek Football Program,” although he didn’t name the Saints player. “I was going out of bounds, and the guy went for my ankle. I said, ‘Hey, man, cut that out.’ He’s like, ‘Well, we get fined if we don’t go after your legs when you go out of bounds.’ … And actually this past year, this last game when we played them, I had a little conversation with Gregg Williams. … He took responsibility, he was saying it wasn’t right, but that’s who he was.”

We’re past the point of being surprised by the Saints’ activities at this point. Would it seem out of character for Williams to have his players pay small fines if they didn’t play with an edge?

The Carolina-New Orleans rivalry was re-ignited last season by a scuffle following a Smith touchdown celebration (not to mention a late hit by Saints safety Roman Harper). We won’t have to wait long to see if Smith’s words further inflame the matchup: The Saints head to Carolina in Week 2 next season.

The Saints just have to hope they have enough non-suspended players to field a defense that day.

Ex-Auburn Player Convicted of First-Degree Robbery

OPELIKA, Ala. Ex-Auburn football player Antonio Goodwin was convicted Friday of first-degree robbery in an armed home invasion in which three of his teammates also were charged.

Jurors reached the verdict in Lee County after deliberating for about 45 minutes. Circuit Judge Christopher Hughes set the sentencing for June 19 and granted the prosecution’s request to immediately revoke bond pending a hearing next week.

First-degree robbery is a Class A felony that carries a likely sentence of 20 years to life in prison because guns were involved.

Goodwin’s former teammates Mike McNeil, who was the starting safety on Auburn’s 2010 national championship team, Dakota Moseley and Shaun Kitchens are tentatively scheduled for trial on June 11. Moseley and Kitchens were freshmen that season.

“I’d be a little concerned if I were them,” said assistant district attorney Kenny Gibbs. “They have trial dates coming up soon, and I’ll try each and every one of them.”

Gibbs said he doesn’t know which one will return to the court first and that all were offered plea deals involving jail time. Defense attorney Lauryn Lauderdale said Goodwin’s pre-trial offer included a 21-year prison sentence.

“We didn’t have any risk” by trying the case, Lauderdale said.

Goodwin, who has been attending Arizona Western College, watched quietly with hands clasped behind him as the verdict was read. His mother, Renatta, buried her head in her hands two rows back.

Lauderdale had argued that Goodwin was impaired after smoking synthetic marijuana, or spice, the night of the robbery with Kitchens, Moseley and other teammates. Gibbs told jurors there was no evidence that Goodwin’s level of intoxication met the standard that he was “unconscious of committing the crime.”

Lauderdale said she doesn’t expect him to be released on bail.

Former Auburn players Mike Dyer, now at Arkansas State, and Neiko Thorpe and current wide receiver DeAngelo Benton testified in the case about the night of the robbery.

Dyer had said that he turned down requests to participate in the robbery after a night of smoking spice and drinking at Benton’s place, and that Goodwin took his handgun without permission. Benton said Goodwin used the drug on the night of the robbery.

The defense rested after opting not to call Auburn coach Gene Chizik and associate head coach Trooper Taylor as witnesses. Hughes limited their potential testimony to Goodwin’s character and said he wouldn’t allow them to talk about spice, their players’ use of it or the university’s drug testing policies.

Lauderdale said Taylor “personally had knowledge that the players were smoking spice and didn’t do anything about it, other than telling them they shouldn’t be doing it.”

Auburn spokesman Kirk Sampson said Taylor and the university had no comment. Spice was legal and sold in local stores at the time, and the university now tests for the drug.

Lauderdale said she plans to appeal the verdict.

“I felt that the jury knew or should have known about the dangers of spice, that Auburn University had known about it and did not take steps to protect the football players,” she said.

Player Takes His Place As Honorary Starter

656c5 big3 honorary starters Player Takes His Place as Honorary Starter

The “Big 3″ are together again on the first tee at The Masters. Gary Player joined Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus this morning to hit the ceremonial opening drives of the tournament. It’s the tradition referred to as the Honorary Starters.

Palmer was the first of the Big 3 to accept the role. Palmer’s first opening drive happened in 2007. At that point, the tournament had been without an honorary starter since Sam Snead’s last turn in 2002.

At one time, Nicklaus said he’d never do it. He didn’t want to be a ceremonial golfer. But sentimentality – and a phone call from Arnie – eventually got to Jack, and Nicklaus joined Palmer as honorary starter in 2010.

And once you have two of the Big 3, you need to add the third, right? So Player stepped in this morning, adding his ceremonial drive to those of Palmer and Nicklaus. And the 2012 Masters is under way.
