Matt Forte Responds to Report About Knee Concerns

CHICAGO (NFL/Newsfeed) – Matt Forte would like you to know his knee is feeling just fine, thank you very much.

After we reported earlier Saturday the Chicago Bears are concerned about the long-term health of the running back’s knees, Forte took to Twitter to show there was no cause for concern on his end.

Sure enough, the video shows Forte sprinting up a hill with a rope and weight attached to his waist. He moves quickly up the grassy incline as miniature dogs bark just off-screen. All in all, it seems like a pretty decent place to spend a Memorial Day weekend.

The report, which originated in the Chicago Tribune, stated that the Bears are privately concerned arthritis could set in, leading to a chronic problem for the 26-year-old back.

Forte’s home conditioning methods certainly don’t make it seem like he’s treating his knees like pieces of fine china. Forte’s agent, Adisa Bakari, felt compelled to speak out on the issue.

“Matt Forte is among the most, if not the most, durable, all-purpose running back in the NFL,” Bakari told the Chicago Sun-Times. “The 2011 season was the first season of his career that he missed any games. Had the Bears been playoff contenders, he could have returned for the balance of the season. To question his durability at this stage in his career is absurd.”

Forte probably believed his consistent production on the field had long since answered any questions about his durability. It has to be frustrating to worry that might not be enough.

Ducks Respond to Report of Pot Use Among Players

EUGENE, OR (WIRE/CFB) – Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens says the Ducks actively work to address possible illegal substance use by student-athletes.

Following a report that estimated 40 to 60 percent of the football team smoked marijuana, Mullens issued a statement Wednesday addressing the story in ESPN The Magazine, which accompanies a larger piece that looks at marijuana use among college football players. The Oregon story is based on interviews with 19 current or former Oregon players and officials.

Mullens says that Oregon tests student-athletes to the full extent possible under Oregon state law, which prohibits random drug tests. The school’s policy allows for testing when there is a “reasonable suspicion.”

“We continue to work diligently to educate our student-athletes on the harmful impact of illegal substances. In addition, we have articulated our illegal substances policy to our student-athletes and have clearly defined sanctions for a positive test,” Mullens said in a statement that was released with the school’s drug policy.

For a positive drug test, Oregon athletes receive counseling and education. A second positive test results in a “behavior modification contract” between the student and the coach. Athletes are ineligible for half of a season following a third failed test, and will be dismissed from the team and lose their scholarship for the fourth.

Kelly Questions Validity of Marijuana Report

EUGENE (CFB/Rivals) – Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly said he believes a media report estimating that between 40 percent and 60 percent of his players use marijuana is inaccurate.

Kelly addressed the story in ESPN The Magazine on Thursday following practice. The report is based on interviews with 19 current or former Oregon players and officials, and it accompanies a larger piece that looks at marijuana use among college football players nationwide.

Kelly said he doubts the Ducks would be as successful as they have been over the past few years if that many players were smoking marijuana.

“If we had that many kids doing it, we wouldn’t be 34-6 (for the last three seasons),” Kelly said. This past season, the Ducks defeated Wisconsin 45-38 in the Rose Bowl.

“We win because of how hard we practice, and I see our kids every day in practice,” Kelly said. “If we saw signs of it – I haven’t seen signs of it.”

Kelly’s comments came a day after Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens responded to the magazine article, which was available online on Wednesday.

“Similar to many college campuses wrestling with the same issue, the University of Oregon actively works to address potential use of any illegal substance through a combination of education, prevention and enforcement activities,” Mullens said in a statement.

He also said Oregon tests student-athletes to the full extent possible under Oregon state law, which prohibits random drug tests. The school’s policy allows for testing when there is a “reasonable suspicion.”

Kelly said Thursday he wished he could perform random tests to settle the matter.

He talked to the team about the report on Thursday. He also said that in the past he has brought in outside experts to speak to players about substance abuse.

“I think it’s a problem that’s on every college campus right now,” he said. “I think the biggest thing, our responsibility as coaches is to educate our guys on what the dangers are.”

For a positive drug test, Oregon athletes receive counseling and education. A second positive test results in a “behavior modification contract” between the student and the coach. Athletes are ineligible for half of a season following a third failed test, and will be dismissed from the team and lose their scholarship for the fourth.

Report: Former Florida Star Schintzius Dies at 43

Posted:

Dwayne Schintzius, one of the biggest characters in Florida basketball history, died Sunday at 43, according to Tampa Bay Online. He battled in recent years with cancer; it was a respiratory failure that wound up taking his life.

Schintzius was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the 1990 NBA draft, and play off and on for six teams in the league until 1999. Prior to his NBA career, Schintzius led UF to its first three NCAA tournament appearances, in the late ’80s.

More from Gators Report:

He was surrounded by family when he died at approximately 2:45 p.m. on Sunday at the Moffitt Cancer Center, where he was first admitted in 2009 after being diagnosed with Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML), an uncommon blood cancer that affects only three in 100,000 individuals in the United States each year.

He was declared cancer-free after receiving an initial successful bone-marrow transplant from his younger brother on Jan. 12, 2010 and appeared to be free of medical issues until recent complications, which required another transplant.

Schintzius requested to be cremated. Details on a memorial service are pending.

“He’s at peace now,” Schintzius’ brother said. “He’s not suffering any more. Now he’s probably cracking jokes and making people laugh in heaven.”

Schintzius is still the only player in SEC history with more than 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 250 assists and 250 blocks. With 1,624 points, he stands at fifth all-time in school history.

He left halfway through his senior season at Florida over disputes and head-butts with then-coach Don DeVoe. While Schintzius initially perceived his exit as a bit of an ex-communication from the program, that was never really the case, and in 2011, the charismatic big man returned there to watch a game — and received a hearty ovation amid a battle for his life.

Report: Sapp “Likely” Out at NFL Network

Report: Sapp “likely” out at NFL Network

Report: Sapp likely Out at NFL Network

When former NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp recently declared bankruptcy, he listed his income at $ 45,000 per month from NFL Network on a contract that expires in August 2012. Sapp said in the paperwork he’s not sure if the contract will be extended.

According to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, it probably won’t be.

Bedard reports, citing two league sources, that Sapp’s employment is “likely over,” and that Sapp has not been on NFL Network in the two-plus weeks since he went on the air and outed former Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey as the player who blew the whistle on the Saints’ bounty system in 2011.

NFLN Senior Vice President of Programming and Production Mark Quenzel previously said Sapp wouldn’t be “fired,” but if Bedard’s report is accurate that was just a matter of semantics. Like when the Steelers didn’t “fire” offensive coordinator Bruce Arians after his contract expired. Even though they didn’t offer him ongoing employment. (Maybe NFLN will claim Sapp “retired,” too.)

We’ve separately heard, though hadn’t confirmed to the point that we felt comfortable reporting it, that Sapp is indeed done at NFL Network. As one industry source explained it, opinions within the building were split on what to do with Sapp, and NFL Network chief Steve Bornstein made the decision to bench Sapp until his contract expires – and then to simply move on.

Though it was wrong for Sapp to “out” Shockey and label him a “snitch,” Sapp initially did so on his Twitter page. As we understand it, he was then invited by NFL Network to come on the air and talk about what he had tweeted.

What did they expect him to say at that point, “No way – it’s a trap”?

Moreover, the fact that NFLN said in the wake of the fiasco that Sapp has been told he’s not a reporter but an analyst implied strongly that he hadn’t previously been told not to report things he has heard. Indeed, the network happily embraced the fact that Sapp received a text message from former University of Miami teammate Ray Lewis during the season, indicating that Lewis would miss the first of four games with a foot injury.

But that’s the way the league usually operates. No one is fired with fanfare, and the official separation comes after the dust settles.

If that’s what the league-owned network chooses to do with Sapp, that’s fine. But the league-owned network shouldn’t have played word games with the public about it, and the league-owned network shouldn’t single Sapp out for something that arose from a much broader failure in TV production and sensitivity to potential legal problems.

Any word yet on how much ‘hurt feelings’ money Shockey wants? He’s unemployed, and has to be getting pretty desperate for cash.

When will these people learn you better be careful what you say in this era of social networking and instant media?

Before someone chimes in and says Sapp should sue because his right to free speech was violated,it wasn’t.

The only thing our right to free speech guarantees is the Government can’t arrest us for expressing our opinions. It doesn’t protect us from a private employer firing us for saying something stupid on Twitter or facebook.

  9. losntina69 says: Apr 8, 2012 7:30 AM

What is it the same people running the nfl are the ones running the network. So he outed bitch Shocky and then they ask him to say it on air. They see all the backlash and now it was wrong for him to say anything???? What kind of sense that make. Good job job there nfl.

  13. keiselsbeard says: Apr 8, 2012 7:33 AM

So, what you’re saying is the NFL is acting hypocritically in this instance? You’re kidding! They would NEVER do that (for those too slow to get it, that’s sarcasm). This is a huge mistake as Sapp is one of the only watchable “analysts” they have on that network.

  14. 7to10for6allday says: Apr 8, 2012 7:33 AM

That stinks bc I enjoyed listening to him instead of loudmouth knucklehead Irvin or stiffboard Warner or company man Faulk. Troll siciliano on the weekly coverage is terrible too. Sapp gave that group swagger and character. #sappyoudaman

Sapp is a big idiot !

  16. nagidac says: Apr 8, 2012 7:34 AM

Glad that Sapp won’t be on TV anymore, but a gutless thing to do for the NFL network. They put him on the air to discuss his tweet about the snitch, then they get rid of him because he tweeted about the snitch.

  17. waltdawg says: Apr 8, 2012 7:34 AM

Good…. Bad analysis chased by an arrogance that is unbearable. Could not have happened to a bigger loser.

  18. wvuandsteelers says: Apr 8, 2012 7:35 AM

How did he screw his life up so bad? At least now I know why he took every appearance on a show offered him (BBQ Pitmasters, Dancing with the Stars).

  19. ascensionparish says: Apr 8, 2012 7:36 AM

Sapp’s television future was in jeopardy long before his “Shockey/Snitch” story. Let’s face it, he (along with a bunch of his co-workers) just wasn’t that good.

  20. steelcityrapist says: Apr 8, 2012 7:38 AM

    What goes around comes around.

  21. kegowhisky says: Apr 8, 2012 7:38 AM

Whichever way it goes, it’ll be hard to find many people staunchly on Sapp’s side. He’s managed to alienate most every football fan out there, and not with humility. The bankruptcy only compounds his problems. A tough lesson for Sapp, maybe too late in life for him to turn it around.

  22. peytonsneck18 says: Apr 8, 2012 7:38 AM

Well there goes that 45K a month, now hoes he gonna pay his child support and take care of his kids????, oh wait……….nevermind

  27. ray1950 says: Apr 8, 2012 7:40 AM

Report: Reds, Joey Votto Agree to 10 Year, $225 Million Deal

Update: It’s a 10-year, $ 225 million extension, according to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale.

///

Joey Votto is under contract for $ 9.5 million this season and $ 17 million next season as part of an extension signed last winter, but Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors reports that the Reds are close to signing the former MVP to a significantly longer extension.

According to Dierkes the new extension “could surpass $ 200 million” in total value, although the length and salary details aren’t known yet.

This offseason Prince Fielder, who’s 27 years old, signed a nine-year, $ 214 million contract with the Tigers and Albert Pujols, who’s 32 years old, inked a 10-year, $ 240 million deal with the Angels. Votto is 28 years old and has been every bit as productive as Fielder and Pujols during the past three seasons, hitting .318 with a .983 OPS during that time while leading the league in OPS in 2010 and on-base percentage in both 2010 and 2011.

This could mean the end of Brandon Phillips’ time in Cincinnati, as it’s hard to see the Reds having the money to keep the impending free agent second baseman around beyond this season if they’re throwing $ 200 million at Votto.
