Former Lakers Coach Phil Jackson Hints at a Return

NEW YORK (NBA/Newsfeed) – Phil Jackson says “there might be” an NBA job that would lure him out of retirement.

The 11-time NBA champion coach tells HBO’s “Real Sports” that the Knicks and Magic openings this offseason were not the positions to bring him back to the bench. In an interview scheduled to air Tuesday night, Jackson confirms that New York, where he started his playing career, didn’t contact him before removing the interim tag from Mike Woodson’s title, but “I wasn’t going to take the job, that’s for sure.”

Jackson calls the Knicks’ roster “clumsy” because their players “don’t fit well together.”

Amare Stoudemire needs “to play in a certain system and a way,” he said. “Carmelo (Anthony) has to be a better passer. The ball can’t stop every time it hits his hands.”

Asked whether that’s the sort of situation he’s successfully turned around in the past, Jackson says: “Yeah. Well, it didn’t happen.”

Jackson says he wasn’t interested in Orlando because it’s too far from his Montana home.

The 66-year-old says he’s feeling better physically after knee replacement surgery in March. Jackson resigned from the Lakers for the second time after last season.

Return to Russia Brings Tatyana McFadden ‘Tons of Fulfillment’

Paralympian presented NYC Marathon gold medal to St. Petersburg orphanage she grew up in

NEW YORK — No matter how much she tried, Tatyana McFadden couldn’t shake the idea.

She had similar thoughts growing up and no matter how many times she asked her mom about it, deep down she knew she wasn’t emotionally prepared to act on it. But this was different.

She was ready to revisit her roots.

Born with a disability that left her paralyzed from the waist down and into a world unable and reluctant to provide the care that she needed, Tatyana overcame myriad obstacles and through a chance encounter at an orphanage in Russia, she found a loving mother willing to rescue her from those substandard dwellings to an existence of possibilities in America.

Now 16 years removed from life as an orphan and one of the premier Paralympic athletes in the world, Tatyana wanted to go back and see exactly where it was that she came from.

“I’ve always wanted to back from when I was younger,” she said. “It was very important for me to do that because it is a big part of who I am and I wanted to experience more of my culture and where I am from. A lot of kids who are adopted want to go back and some don’t. I was one of those who wanted to go back and see where I was from.

“It takes a lot of time to think about it, to reflect and know yourself and whether you are emotionally ready or not. I think because I was older and kind of knew what to expect, good or bad, and that I was going to be either disappointed or happy, that I was emotionally ready for it.”

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Tatyana, 22, was born with a hole in her spine, a condition known as spina bifida. At the time, there was little hope for children with serious disabilities in Russia and Tatyana was left with her spinal cord exposed for nearly three weeks.

“In Russia if you died before 21 days it was as if you never lived,” Deborah said. “Tatyana was born strong. Someone whose spinal cord was left outside her body for 21 days should have contracted an infection. She survived, and after 21 days doctors had no choice but to perform surgery.”

In the orphanage, Tatyana was one of the few children with disabilities and the facility and staff were ill equipped to provide for a child with such needs. There was no wheelchair for her to get around and no activities tailored to her physical limitations. But Tatyana refused to live encumbered.

“Because there was no wheelchair, she crawled around at first,” Deborah said, “and as she got older and wanted to be involved with the other children, she would walk on her hands. The staff told me that one day they brought the children to a make-shift pool and a lot of them were screaming and afraid to put their faces in the water. Tatyana just flung herself in and told the others that if she could do it, they could do it, which was just extraordinary. I do believe from Day 1 rather than not succeeding or just surviving life, she survived by exceling.”

In 1993, Deborah was working as director of the International Children’s Alliance, an orphans’ advocacy group. When U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev opened up the country to humanitarian aid, she went to St. Petersburg to facilitate funding to children with disabilities. It was a cause dear to Deborah after she spent four and a half years, from ages 23 to 27, in a wheelchair after contracting a freak virus that shut her system down.

On that trip, Deborah visited Orphanage 13. It was there that she encountered a 4-and-a-half-year-old girl who had amazed the staff by defying death and disability. It was an encounter that changed the lives of both Deborah and Tatyana.

“She was just bright-eyed and active,” Deborah recalled. “I spoke English to her she spoke Russian back to me. I showed her how to use my camera and she took it and played with it. There was something there, a connection that was nothing short of magical and miraculous.”

When Deborah went back to the hotel that night she could not get Tatyana off her mind. At the orphanage, Tatyana told the other children that their American visitor “was my mom.”

Deborah had no intention of adopting a child, let alone one with disabilities, but realized there was no way she could leave Russia without Tatyana. The next day she returned to the orphanage.

“When I said I wanted to adopt Tatyana, they said, ‘Come back and we’ll give you a baby that’s cute and healthy.’ Tatyana was pretty sick and atrophied and was seen as having no value in life.”

MAKING AN IMPACT

Upon arriving in the United States, Tatyana spoke no English. Her first memorable words were in Russian: “Ya sama,” which means “I myself.”

It was a proclamation she was determined to fulfill, whether as an activist or athlete.

She has argued for equal access to school athletics for young people with disabilities, her work resulting in landmark legislation in Maryland.

In 2004, as a 15-year-old and youngest member of the U.S. track and field team, she won silver in the category T54 100m and bronze in the 200m at the Paralympic Games in Athens. Two years later, at the World Championships she won the 100m in world-record time and silver medals in the 200m and 400m. In 2008, at the Beijing Paralympics, she won three silvers and a bronze. At the World Championships in January she won gold in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m, and bronze in the 100m.

Tatyana has also found success in the marathon, winning the Chicago Marathon in 2009 and again last month and the ING New York City Marathon in 2010. She is hoping to win another title here this week and five gold medals at the 2012 London Paralympics.

“It is an unbelievable honor to win all of these medals and get to represent my country,” Tatyana said. “I can’t begin to tell you how truly blessed I am.”

Sessions Return to Lakers Will Be Costly

LOS ANGELES (HELIN/NBA) – Ramon Sessions will tell anyone who will listen he is enjoying his time as a Laker – he has come in and provided some quickness and playmaking at the point guard the team desperately needed under new coach Mike Brown. He said he really wants to return to the Lakers next season.

Just not enough to pick up his player option for next year.

Rather, he is likely to opt-out and become a free agent so he can get paid. But he told the Los Angeles Times he’d like to get paid by the Lakers ideally.

“I want to be here. I don’t know what that means or how that’s going to happen. It ain’t no secret. I’ll tell anybody that. I tell [Lakers General Manager] Mitch Kupchak. I tell my agent. I want to be here. Period. For a long time.”

Sessions is set to make just under $ 4.6 million next season. The Lakers have his Bird rights, but they are also a team trying to trim payroll because with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum alone they are going to be paying the luxury tax in the coming years – and in the new CBA that tax gets more regressive and painful each year.

The Lakers want him back and he wants to come back, you would think a deal could get done. But if the Lakers are trying to save money and another team that needs a point guard comes in over the top… money still talks in the NBA.

It’s going to be an interesting summer in Los Angeles as the Lakers try to work an extension for Bynum (next season is the last year of his deal) while getting their tax bill down.

Healthy Toews Tries to Build Off Successful Return

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Jonathan Toews wanted a victory Thursday night. He settled for a healthy and successful return to the ice.

Jonathan Toews

Center – CHI

GOALS: 1 | ASST: 1 | PTS: 2
SOG: 2 | +/-: 2

Playing for the first time in 22 games since suffering a concussion in mid-February, Toews scored a goal on his second shift of the game, assisted on a game-tying goal with 14.2 seconds left in regulation and took every shot the Phoenix Coyotes dished out in-between without a problem. The Blackhawks lost Game 1 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals 3-2 in overtime, but they know their captain is back on the ice and engaged as the series moves along.

“It was a tough one to jump in to. I think that adrenaline and that excitement of playing in the playoffs and even just playing in your first game in a long time helps to kind of power through,” Toews said. “I think, physically, the worst is over. No more excuses. Now I’m looking forward to going out there and playing my game and not thinking too much and just letting things happen out there.”

Trying to keep it simple, Toews spent most of his time around the net, sniffing for rebounds and getting the attention of goalie Mike Smith and the Phoenix defense. Playing between Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa, he endured a big hit from Phoenix captain Shane Doan behind the Coyotes net but popped right back up to occupy the crease.

“You recognize how incredibly good Jonathan Toews is,” Doan said. “If he doesn’t get hurt, he’s probably getting talked about for the Hart Trophy. He comes back after missing 22 games and has a goal and an assist and plays huge minutes and is a such a big part of their team.

“But we’re going to be physical with everyone. We have to be. We just can’t let them skate. They’ve got too much skill.”

Toews didn’t get any more attention that he figured on – maybe even less.

“I expected worse, and that’s not to undershoot what happened,” Toews said. “But I’m going to be at the net. I’m going to be right there in front of the goalie every whistle. Every chance they get they’re going to take shots. I expected that and it’s no big deal. I’m just happy with the way I dealt with it.”

So was Chicago coach Joel Quenneville, who was also happy to see Toews on the ice for Friday’s optional skate with no need for a day off.

“He played a lot of minutes and handled the minutes well and he feels fine today,” Quenneville said. “That was a big hurdle and a good test and hopefully he keeps improving off of those levels.”

Toews, Kane and Hossa combined for 12 shots – seven of them by Kane – and spent a lot of time in the Phoenix zone. But Phoenix goalie Mike Smith had a good look at most of them, stopping 43 of 45 shots.

Quenneville wouldn’t commit to keeping the trio together for Game 2 – other forwards like Patrick Sharp and the fourth-liners struggled – but Toews was lobbying for the status quo when it came to his trio.

“We have to be patient the three of us and we’ll keep getting scoring chances and they’ll go in when it counts,” he said. “We got one to start off yesterday and one to tie the game and hopefully we can keep that going.”

Watford, Zeller Will Return to Indiana Next Season

INDIAN OLIS Christian Watford and Cody Zeller helped Indiana’s basketball program turn things around this past season.

They have even bigger plans for next season.

The two players said Tuesday they would return to school next season, putting off the NBA and making the Hoosiers one of the Big Ten favorites.

“Cody is a player who, along with his unique skill set, makes everyone around him better,” coach Tom Crean said in a statement issued by the athletic department. “He is going to have great opportunities ahead of him. … He will have the opportunity to be as good as any player in college basketball.”

Indiana could be as good as any team in the country, too.

With Zeller and Watford both in the lineup, the Hoosiers will return all five starters — including their top two scorers — from a team that reached the regional semifinals before losing 102-90 to eventual national champion Kentucky.

It was a remarkable comeback for Indiana, which hadn’t even posted a winning record in Crean’s first three seasons in Bloomington.

Watford’s buzzer-beating shot to beat top-ranked Kentucky in December suddenly put the Hoosiers back on the national map. Before the season ended, Indiana had also upset No. 2 Ohio State and No. 5 Michigan State — marking the first time in school history that the Hoosiers knocked off three top five teams during the regular season.

At 27-9, Indiana produced its highest victory total in two decades and the Hoosiers won two NCAA tournament games for the first time since losing in the national championship game to Maryland in 2002. It completed an undefeated non-conference season for the first time since 1989-90e and won a school record 18 games at Assembly Hall.

“I’m looking forward to earning my degree and to continue restoring the winning tradition at IU,” Watford said. “I believe in coach Crean and our staff, and I am eager to lead my new teammates and build on what we started.”

The Alabama native chose Indiana after Crean decided to make him a cornerstone of a major rebuilding project that began after Kelvin Sampson’s phone-call scandal gutted the program. They were the first major NCAA infractions leveled against the school since 1960.

Watford has lived up to the hype. In three seasons, the 6-foot-9 forward has averaged 13.4 points and 5.8 rebounds. As a senior, he will be the Big Ten’s top returning scorer next season with 1,287 career points and is shooting 43.7 percent from 3-point range.

Keeping Zeller will be even more important for the Hoosiers, though.

After being selected the Big Ten freshman of the year by the league’s coaches, some thought Indiana’s 2011 Mr. Basketball winner might head for the riches of the NBA.

Instead, the 6-foot-11 center, whose brother, Tyler, will be in this year’s draft, decided to stay in school. Zeller led Indiana with 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game and shot 62.3 percent from the field, fourth in the nation and second-best all-time at Indiana.

Zeller’s impact exceeded his gaudy numbers. The ability to pass out of the post, block shots and be a go-to player when things got tough helped open things up on the outside — a combination that was difficult to defend.

Indiana will now add one of the nation’s top recruiting classes to a team that returns its top five scorers, which is a big reason the two NBA hopefuls decided to come back for one more season of college ball.

“I grew up hoping that one day I would get the opportunity to play in the NBA, but at this point, I’m not ready for my college experience to be over,” Zeller said. “My college experience at IU has exceeded my expectations on and off the court. I look forward to playing at Assembly Hall next year in front of the greatest fans in the country.”

Lions Turn Attention to a Postseason Return

Lions turn attention to a postseason return

Lions Turn Attention to a Postseason Return

After missing the playoffs for 11 straight seasons, the Lions finally made it in 2011. And they don’t plan to wait a decade or more to return.

It’s a reminder of the progress the Lions are making as a franchise that the Detroit News can publish a story about how the Lions need to maintain the level of play they achieved last year. During their string of 10 straight losing seasons from 2001 to 2010, the offseason stories were about how the Lions desperately needed to turn things around.

Lions General Manager Martin Mayhew noted that the Lions think they’re improving this offseason, and that they think they can be a team that makes the playoffs regularly, not once a decade.

“We want to be one of those teams that are in the playoffs every year. But we have a lot of work to do,” Mayhew said.

Whether the Lions have actually done anything this offseason to improve is a big question, as the Lions have focused mostly on trying to keep their own free agents. But Lions coach Jim Schwartz says that is how the team is improving.

“One of the biggest things is what we just went through the last couple of weeks of free agency,” Schwartz said. “Teams that are trying to sign their own free agents aren’t going to have the money to go out and get other free agents because you are paying your own good players. If you are drafting well, you already have good players and you are paying them. You are able to focus on your own team.”

Drafting poorly was the primary reason the Lions were the worst team in the NFL for a decade, and drafting well is the primary reason they finally got to the playoffs last season. Another good draft may be all the Lions need to finally become a team that wins playoff games.
