Red Sox May Have Ross Back Next Week

CHICAGO (MLB/Newsfeed) — Red Sox outfielder Cody Ross, who has been sidelined since May 19 with a fractured navicular bone in his left foot, will start a rehab assignment for Triple-A Pawtucket in Buffalo on Sunday. Ross will then travel to Syracuse with the PawSox for Monday and Tuesday’s games.

Ross could return to the Red Sox by the middle of next week if all goes well.

Ross was with the club in Miami earlier this week and clearly looked antsy to get back to work.

“Yeah, baseball is his life,” said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine. “He loves it. He didn’t like not playing.”

When Ross returns, the Red Sox could have some interesting decisions to make. It might be hard to continue playing Adrian Gonzalez in the outfield while having David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis and Will Middlebrooks all in the lineup if Ross is also available.

“We’ll see,” said Valentine. “We’ll see who else is in the mix when he comes back.”

McNamee to Testify This Week in Clemens Trial

WASHINGTON (MLB/Newsfeed) – The government’s case against Roger Clemens reaches a crucial juncture as the fourth week of the former star pitcher’s federal perjury trial begins Monday.

Brian McNamee, the strength trainer who told Congress he injected Clemens with performance-enhancing drugs on numerous occasions and saved evidence he and the government contend proves it, is due on the stand early in the week for what is expected to be the most dramatic testimony of the trial. With the defense poised to attack McNamee’s credibility, decisions about the government’s star witness – and the key witness who testified last week, Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte – are about to land in Judge Reggie Walton’s hands. Unbeknownst to the jurors who ultimately will decide the case, the status of testimony from not only McNamee but also Pettitte will be decided by Walton after hearing arguments out of the jury’s presence.

The key questions: Just how much will the defense be allowed to delve into McNamee’s “prior bad acts,” as the prosecution has called them, his divorce proceedings and other aspects that could damage the credibility of the only person claiming direct knowledge of Clemens’ use of performance-enhancing drugs? Will the admission by Pettitte that he’s uncertain whether he misunderstood Clemens or he in fact heard Clemens admit to taking human-growth hormone during a workout prior to the 2000 season cause his testimony about the conversation to be stricken from the trial?

The resolution of those issues and the much-anticipated presence of McNamee in the same courtroom with Clemens – and his defense team – will make this a pivotal week in the proceedings. Clemens is being tried on six federal charges of perjury, giving false statements and obstruction of Congress stemming from his Feb. 5, 2008, deposition and his Feb. 13, 2008, appearance before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, during which he denied ever using performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee testified before Congress that he injected Clemens with steroids and human-growth hormone on numerous occasions, and that he saved physical evidence he says proves it. That evidence was shown to the jury last week when federal agent Jeff Novitzky was giving direct testimony under questioning from Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven Durham. Novitzky testified to receiving the evidence in January 2008, and he described in great detail the vials of steroids and HGH, syringes, apparently bloodstained cotton balls and other medical waste McNamee says he kept in a 16-ounce beer can since 2001. Novitzky will be on the stand as the trial reconvenes Monday to complete redirect examination by Durham. He’ll be followed by Federal Bureau of Investigation agent John Longmire, the lead case agent who has overseen the gathering of evidence against Clemens and who likely will further set up the connection between the evidence and Clemens, which the government contends was confirmed via DNA testing. McNamee won’t testify until Walton lays down the ground rules on what is relevant to the case. Lawyers for both McNamee and his ex-wife have filed motions to quash a subpoena issued by Clemens’ defense team for documents from their divorce, and Walton is expected to rule on those motions sometime Monday.

The defense still hopes to expand the extent of McNamee’s personal and professional history that can be shown to the jury. Last week, Pettitte’s testimony went generally as planned for the prosecution until the last minutes of his cross-examination by defense attorney Michael Attanasio, who is representing Clemens along with Hardin. Attanasio asked Pettitte if it was fair to say that he’s “50-50″ on his recollection of the conversation about HGH, and Pettitte said, “I’d say that’s fair.” As soon as Pettitte left the stand, the defense moved to strike his recollection of the conversation, and Walton suggested the prosecution did not rehabilitate its witness in redirect examination. The prosecution asked for 48 hours to respond to the motion to strike the testimony. “My understanding is that at this time he’s conflicted, he didn’t know if Mr. Clemens said that to him,” Walton said of Pettitte.

Knicks Will Evaluate Lin Further Later This Week

MIAMI (NBA/Newsfeed) – The New York Knicks sound hopeful that Jeremy Lin’s return to the lineup may come sooner than later.

Lin did some on-court work in Miami for the fourth consecutive day, before the Knicks played the Miami Heat on Monday night in Game 2 of an Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Game 3 isn’t until Thursday in New York. The Knicks plan to practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, and that could give them time to get a better feel for how Lin’s recovery from surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee is going.

“We haven’t run up and down in terms of being able to scrimmage or anything like that,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. “And that’s where the test is going to come. When he’s got to cut and guard people and push and do things of that nature, that’s the big test. And we don’t have time to practice like that. We really don’t. So basically all he’s done is drills and he’s shot the ball a lot here as of late, but only time will tell.”

Lin was inactive for Game 2 against the Heat. The Knicks made one change to their starting lineup, with Landry Fields listed among the first five after guard Iman Shumpert was lost for six to eight months with a torn ligament in his left knee after a non-contact injury in Saturday’s series opener.

Tyson Chandler was also in the lineup for the Knicks after battling flu-like symptoms for several days, along with Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Baron Davis, who has been dealing with back soreness all season. With Davis hurting and Shumpert gone, Lin – if healthy – would figure to be a boost to the New York backcourt.

Miami’s listed starters for Game 2 were unchanged: LeBron James and Udonis Haslem at forward, Chris Bosh at center, Mario Chalmers and Dwyane Wade at guard. Eddy Curry and Terrel Harris were inactive.

Lin said Sunday that he did not want to commit to a timetable for returning, noting that he’s still been unable to do some of things he would need to in game situations. Monday marked four weeks since his surgery, and the team originally expected his recovery to be a six-week process.

Lin averaged 14.2 points and 6.2 assists in 35 regular-season appearances with the Knicks. He started 25 of those games, averaging 18.2 points and 7.7 assists in those contests – including a brilliant run in February when Lin, shortly after being inserted into the lineup, scored 114 points in his first four starts and 163 in his first six, making the former Harvard guard an NBA phenomenon almost overnight.

The Knicks were 15-10 with Lin as a starter in the regular season, 21-20 when he was either coming off the bench or not in the lineup.

“He shot (Monday), went through some halfcourt offensive sets that we had put in,” Woodson said. “So he’s moving around. When he decides to play, I don’t really know at this point. We’ll probably have a better feel once we get back to New York.”

Lottery Odds Also Decided Last Week of Season

NBA (Helin) – We keep talking about the teams talking playoffs – who gets home court, Boston or Atlanta, or can Phoenix catch Utah and get the last spot in the West – but there is a tight race among teams who have long forgotten about the playoffs.

A lot of lottery odds are still to be decided this week as teams are bunched up near the bottom. A lot of team’s chances of landing Anthony Davis or taking a risk on Andre Drummond ride on this week.

Make no mistake, the Bobcats will clear and away have the best lottery odds. Thanks to their historically bad 7-56 record, they will have a 25 percent chance at the top spot and Davis. Washington (17-46) will finish second worst and have a 19.9 percent chance of winning the lottery. The matchup of Washington and Charlotte will have no meaning on this, it will just be hard for the rest of us to watch.

But after that it gets interesting.

New Orleans is third worst as I write this at 20-44 but then comes Sacramento (21-43), Cleveland (21-42), New Jersey (22-42) and Toronto (22-42) all within two games of each other. The Warriors are 23-41 and just one game back of the Nets and Raptors. They have a handy chart of all this at the Plain Dealer.

It matters if you are in tank mode – as it stands right now the Hornets would have a 15.6 percent chance of winning the top pick, the Raptors 4.3 percent. The odds drop off pretty steeply, and teams like some of the guys at the top of this draft a lot. Here is how the Plain Dealer describes it with the focus on Cleveland (for obvious reasons).

Losing out could move Cleveland ahead of Sacramento and New Orleans and into the third slot. That would give the Cavs a 15.6 percent chance of picking No. 1 and a 46.9 percent chance of picking somewhere in the top three.

Winning out could drop the Cavs below New Jersey, Toronto and Golden State and into a tie for eighth with Detroit. Losing the tiebreaker would put Cleveland ninth, with only a 1.7 percent chance of drafting No. 1 and just a 6.1 percent chance of picking somewhere in the top three.

There’s going to be some shifting at the bottom of the standings this week, too, and it may be as interesting to watch as at the top. Well, almost.

This Week: Zurich Classic

The PGA Tour takes a detour out of Texas to Louisiana this week for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where Bubba Watson is the defending champion.

So Bubba’s back, his first tournament since winning the 2012 Masters. It’s been quite a few weeks for Watson as he made the media rounds; it will be good to see him back on the course and interesting to note how large are the crowds following his group.

Among others in the Zurich Classic field are Luke Donald, Nick Watney, Ernie Els, Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker, Justin Rose, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Retief Goosen and David Toms. Certainly an upgrade from last week’s Valero Texas Open (although the Texas Open did produce a good story with the “return” of Ben Curtis).

See our Zurich Classic tournament page for the list of past champions plus more tourney info and trivia.

The European Tour is in Korea for the Ballantine’s Championship, co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour. Among the big names playing there are Adam Scott, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Y.E. Yang and Darren Clarke.

And the LPGA leaves Hawaii, where Ai Miyazato won the Lotte Championship, for Alabama and the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic. Maria Hjorth is the defending champion.

This Week: RBC Heritage and Malaysian Open

The tournament known as The Heritage certainly does have a rich heritage, dating to 1969, boasting Arnold Palmer as its first-ever champion, and taking place every year at Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head. That heritage almost ended, however, when Verizon dropped sponsorship following the 2010 event.

In 2011, it was played without a title sponsor using an emergency tournament fund. Only when RBC – the Royal Bank of Canada – stepped in as sponsor was the event’s place on the 2012 PGA Tour schedule secure.

That 2010 event was won by Jim Furyk, and he’s among the favorites this week. So is defending champ Brandt Snedeker. Among the big names in the field are Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Matt Kuchar, Padraig Harrington, Bill Haas, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.

The European Tour heads to Southeast Asia this week for the Maybank Malaysian Open. That field is topped by defending champion Matteo Manassero and also includes Louis Oosthuizen, Martin Kaymer and Charl Schwartzel.
