Pague Looks to Make It Two Wins in Two Weeks

Atlantic City (UFC/Newsfeed) – Dustin Pague will step inside the Octagon looking for back-to-back wins in a two-week span as he replaces the injured Francisco Rivera against Ken Stone at the UFC on FX event in Atlantic City on June 22nd.

Pague and Stone made quick work of their last opponents, finishing with the same choke in the first round — Pague’s victory came last Friday at UFC on FX 3.

Pague is Stone’s third opponent in short order — his original opponent, Edwin Figueroa was injured and replaced just weeks ago by Rivera.

Serena Williams Wins, Venus Bows Out at Madrid

MADRID (WTA/Newsfeed) – Serena Williams beat Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-1 to reach the Madrid Open’s second round, while sister Venus lost 6-4, 6-1 to Angelique Kerber on Monday.

The ninth-seeded Williams had 13 aces and 40 winners against Vesnina, who was struggling with her game on the slippery blue clay court. The Russian lost her balance in the sixth game and set up a break point for Williams, who pulled ahead to lead 4-2.

Williams’ ninth ace of the match provided a set point for the ninth-ranked American to take the first set and wrap up the match against the 68th-ranked Russian in just over an hour.

“I’m feeling good but I wasn’t thrilled,” said Williams, who will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia. “This is my first tournament in Europe so hopefully I will just keep my good form and just keep going,” she added.

Venus Williams‘ third tournament since being sidelined by illness is over after being broken six times by the 12th-seeded German. The seven-time major champion reached the quarterfinals at Miami and Charleston, S.C., earlier this season.

Fifth-seeded Samantha Stosur rallied to beat Christina McHale 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to reach the third round, as did French Open champion Li Na after winning 6-3, 6-1 against Silvia Soler-Espinosa.

Petra Cetkovska also advanced, beating Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-4, 7-5.

Defending champion Petra Kvitova beat Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-3 in her first-round match.

Kvitova needed over an hour to beat Erakovic, with the Czech player saving all three break points against her while converting four.

Also on Monday, Andrea Hlavackova, Ekaterina Makarova, Lucie Hradecka, Lucie Safarova and Sara Errani won their first-round matches.

Local favorite Carla Suarez Navarro rallied to beat 15th-seeded Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to reach the second round.

In the men’s tournament, Spain’s Nicolas Almagro rallied to beat Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3.

Almagro saved four set points before hitting long to lose the first set in a tiebreaker. The thirteen-ranked Spanish player broke his opponent in the opening game of the second after adjusting his game to the new court surface to win the match in three sets.

“The court isn’t very good, it’s very slippery,” Almagro said of the unorthodox blue clay court that has been criticized by players after it was introduced for the first time in this year’s tournament.

Other winners Monday included Serbia’s Victor Troicki, Mikhail Youzhny of Russia and American Ryan Harrison who beat Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain ousted 2006 Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic begins his title defense Tuesday against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who beat Victor Hanescu 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-3.

Nadal Wins 8th Straight Monte Carlo Title

Updated Apr 22, 2012 3:46 PM ET

MONACO

If the match itself was anticlimactic, the achievement was not. By defeating Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-1, Rafael Nadal won the Rolex Monte Carlo Open for the eighth straight year while also breaking the stranglehold the Serb had enjoyed against him, winning the last seven finals they had played.

“First of all you need luck,” Nadal said afterward. True. You also need to be an extraordinary athlete and an amazing competitor. This is one of the nine ATP Masters Series 1000 tournaments, a level just below the Grand Slams. Winning it once is an achievement but this run of success at any event is unprecedented in the Open era. Ilie Nastase, who was here this week, won three straight titles between 1971-73 but otherwise one needs to go way back in the history books, to the very beginning of this tournament which was dominated for its first 10 years by British brothers Reg and Lawrie Doherty, who kept it in the family between 1897 and 1906.

But this modern age requires a completely different level of expertise and athleticism and it is unlikely that anyone in the future will be able to emulate Nadal’s feat although the man himself could extend it. Who would bet against him winning here again next year?

Obviously Nadal was thrilled at his success but there was an elephant out there on court and it involved Djokovic’s state of mind. On Thursday his grandfather Vladimir Djokovic, who had been his mentor and inspiration, had died. On Saturday he was buried in Serbia. After much thought, Novak had decided to play on, missing the funeral. Reaching the final took great mental strength but he ran out of it Sunday.

“I definitely don’t want to take anything away from Rafa’s win,” said the world No. 1. “He deserved to win today. He was the better player. But it’s a fact that I didn’t have any emotional energy left in me. It was a bad day. If I wanted to have any chance of winning against Rafa on clay, I needed that extra gear which I didn’t have. I’ve never been caught up in this kind of emotional situation before. I won three matches since the news that I got. I think I did pretty well. Obviously today I faced a better player. That’s all I can say.”

Nadal was not about to get into his opponent’s emotional state. Asked if he felt Djokovic was at his best, he replied, “No, Djokovic wasn’t the real best Djokovic. But my real best is when I play well and when I play bad. The real Rafa is not only when I play my best. If I take that for myself, the same for the others. Djokovic had amazing year and a half, always perfect, no mistakes. Today he had more mistakes than usual. I won 6-3, 6-1 which is for sure not normal to win against the best player of the world. But it happened. Very happy for my victory. Sorry for him.”

It is clear that Nadal’s mind is already on the future, not just at Barcelona where he plays next week (and Djokovic doesn’t) but the Masters 1000 tournaments in Rome and Madrid where the Serb beat him last year and then the French Open where he will expect Djokovic, who lost to Roger Federer in the semifinals there a year ago, to meet him in the final this time.

“It’s a very mental game,” Djokovic had observed a few minutes before. He was referring to his current state of mind but Nadal, the ultimate competitor, is already thinking ahead and does not want to give an inch.

Technically, Nadal will take some pointers with him into future battles. “Yesterday I said in press conference that I have to return a little bit more aggressive, I have to return a little bit longer (deeper). I did. I did very good backhand returns. And against his forehand , try not to open up the court a lot. When you open the court to a lot of players you are in a good position. But against him not, because he’s able to open you more with the next shot. So I try to hit more to the middle. After that I felt I can change directions.”

It was windy again and Nadal mastered the conditions better than an opponent who was not in the right state of mind to buckle down and be patient. It will be different next time. For now Nadal has simply laid down a marker. He rules here and even Prince Albert is not about to argue.

A Lefty Wins Masters, but It’s Bubba, Not Mickelson

Do shamrock green and pink go together? They do if you’re Bubba Watson and you now have a Green Jacket to pair with your pink outfits, pink clothes and pink driver.

Watson is a first-time major championship winner after outlasting Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff at the 2012 Masters. Watson and Oosthuizen finished at 278, 10-under par, then both parred the first extra hole. On the second playoff hole (hole No. 10), Watson hit a recovery shot that will go down as the shot of the tournament.

Which is saying something, given that on his second hole of the day, Oosthuizen scored only the fourth double eagle in Masters history. But on playoff hole number two, from well wide of the fairway, in the trees, and off of pine straw, Watson hit a big-hooking wedge shot not just on the green, but into birdie range.

Bubba didn’t need to make that birdie, though, when Oosthuizen missed his par putt. Watson 2-putted for the Green Jacket.

Watson is the third lefty to win The Masters. And those three lefties have all earned their wins since 2003. First was Mike Weir in 2003, then Phil Mickelson in 2004, 2006 and 2010.

Speaking of Mickelson: He was the lefty most thought would win this tournament; he entered the final round one stroke off the lead. But disaster struck on the fourth hole when Mickelson’s tee ball was short and well wide. It wound up in a part of the course rarely seen before, a stand of bamboo. Mickelson tried to punch the ball out right-handed, needed two swings to get at it, and wound up with a triple-bogey. He fought back to even par on the round after that, but never really seemed to gain any momentum. Mickelson wound up tied for third, two strokes behind.

There are now four lefties who’ve won majors; in additon to the three left-handed Masters champions, Bob Charles won a British Open.

What did you think of the 2012 Masters? Are you happy with a Bubba Watson victory?

US Wins Doubles for 2-1 Davis Cup Lead

Updated Apr 7, 2012 2:16 PM ET

ROQUEBRUNE, France

Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) Saturday to give the United States a 2-1 lead over France in their Davis Cup quarterfinal.

The Bryans, the top-ranked doubles team, have not lost a Davis Cup match since 2008. They were rarely troubled against a French pair that struggled to find any rhythm on the clay at the Monte Carlo Country Club.

US Wins Doubles for 2 1 Davis Cup Lead

World Group Quarterfinals
April 6-8

“We were ready for a dogfight,” Bob Bryan said. “I thought we did a great job of not letting the crowd get too loud.”

On Sunday, No. 11 John Isner faced sixth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in singles. Teenager Ryan Harrison, ranked 66th will play No. 13 Gilles Simon.

“Jo is capable of beating him,” France captain Guy Forget said. “We’re better ranked than them, so we have to go out and win.”

Tsonga looked shaky at times when he beat the inexperienced Harrison in four sets on Friday. Isner’s huge serve and dominant forehand present a much bigger threat than Harrison’s shot-making.

“He wanted to play on clay, now we must go and get the win. We all have our duties and responsibilities,” Forget said. “It’s a heavyweight contest between two big hitters.”

On Saturday, the French pair lost their serve at the start of the first and second set. Although they showed more fight in the third set, the Bryans did not have to face a single break point.

The United States trailed 2-1 in the tiebreaker, but quickly rallied for a 5-2.

Llodra’s long forehand offered match point, which the Americans converted when Benneteau’s backhand down the line sailed out.

“We both served at a high percentage, that’s always key,” Mike Bryan said. “We’re good frontrunners, so we played hard.”

Forget was disappointed with how his players approached the match, and said they lacked composure.

The tone was set from the start when Llodra’s double fault gifted the Americans the lead, even though France had been 40-30 up in the opening game. Mike Bryan’s crisp volley made it 2-0 and Benneteau had to save a break point in the next game.

The last time the Bryans lost a Davis Cup match together was against France, four years ago, when Llodra played alongside Arnaud Clement.
